The past simple is the English verb form used for an action or state completed at a finished time in the past. Most verbs form it by adding -ed, while a closed set of common verbs change their form instead. It is the ordinary narrative form of English and the first past form most learners meet.
The short version
Part of the TEFL teaching methods and classroom techniques glossary
English has a great many verb forms and almost all of them are built rather than inflected. The past simple is one of the exceptions.
The Cambridge English TKT Glossary, the reference list used across the Teaching Knowledge Test, separates the two ideas that get confused here. Tense shows the time of an action or event
, while aspect is a way of looking at verb forms without looking specifically at the time of the action or event
. English marks tense on the verb in exactly two places, present and past. Everything else, including the perfect and the continuous, is aspect stacked on top of one of those two.
The past simple is therefore the genuine article: a single word carrying past time, with nothing layered over it. That is worth saying in a staffroom because it explains why the form is so short, so frequent and so early in every syllabus. It is the plain past.
The British Council states the regular rule in one line: With most verbs, the past tense is formed by adding -ed
. The negative and the question are where the form stops being simple, because both of them hand the tense marking to did and return the main verb to its base.
| Form | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Affirmative, regular | subject + verb + ed | They finished the report. |
| Affirmative, irregular | subject + past form | They wrote the report. |
| Negative | subject + did not + base form | They did not finish the report. |
| Question | did + subject + base form | Did they finish the report? |
| With be | was or were, with no did at all | She was late. Were you there? |
The last row is the one that trips classes up. Be behaves differently from every other verb in the past simple, and a learner who has drilled the did pattern thoroughly will produce did you were there precisely because the drilling worked.
The double marking error
Because the affirmative marks the past on the main verb and the question marks it on did, learners regularly mark it twice: did you went, she did not finished. This is not carelessness. It is a reasonable generalisation from the affirmative, applied consistently. The useful classroom line is that English marks past once per clause, and did has already done it, so the main verb goes back to its base. Said that way it becomes a rule rather than a list of corrections.
The British Council LearnEnglish grammar reference groups the uses into four, and the grouping is a sound basis for a lesson because the first three are about what kind of past event it is and the fourth is about the words that signal it.
| Use | Typical time expressions | Example |
|---|---|---|
| A single completed past event | yesterday, last week, in 1983, at nine o’clock | I met my wife in 1983. |
| A repeated past action | every day, often, always, when I was a boy | When I was a boy, I walked a mile to school every day. |
| A past state | for ten years, all my childhood | I lived abroad for ten years. |
| With ago expressions | two years ago, a long time ago | I started teaching six years ago. |
Use categories and the first three examples quoted from the British Council LearnEnglish page Past simple. The same reference notes that at intermediate level the form also carries hypothetical meaning about the present or future, which is the second conditional and the wish pattern rather than a past use at all.
The written rule takes a minute. The spoken one is where the lesson time goes, and it is routinely skipped.
The regular ending has three pronunciations in English and the choice is not free. It is determined entirely by the sound, not the letter, at the end of the base verb.
| Ending sound of the base verb | -ed is pronounced | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| A voiceless sound, such as p, k, f, s, sh, ch | as a t sound, one syllable | stopped, worked, laughed, watched |
| A voiced sound or a vowel, such as b, g, v, m, n, l, r | as a d sound, one syllable | robbed, played, listened, called |
| A t or a d sound | as an extra syllable, id | wanted, needed, decided, started |
Only the third group adds a syllable. Learners who assume all three do will say work-ed and stopp-ed, which is both audible and persistent, and learners whose first language does not permit final consonant clusters will drop the ending altogether in stopped and asked. Those are two different problems and they need different remedies.
An A2 group of twelve teenagers in an evening class, mixed first languages, mostly Arabic and Turkish speakers with two Ukrainians. The target is the past simple in narrative, and the teacher has fifty minutes.
She opens with four photographs from a weekend and tells the class what she did, in order, without naming the grammar. The class listens twice. On the second listening they write down every verb they hear, which produces a board list containing went, missed, waited, got, cooked and was.
Rather than explaining, she asks the class to put the six verbs into two columns and to decide for themselves what the columns are. This is guided discovery, and it takes about four minutes.
Group one: missed, waited, cooked. Something was added to the end.
Group two: went, got, was. The word changed.
The class names the split correctly and quickly. She then reads the three verbs in group one aloud and asks how many syllables each has, which produces the second discovery of the lesson: waited has two and the other two have one. The sorting is done by the learners in both cases, and it sticks better than the explanation would have.
The controlled practice then produces a sentence she expected: I didn’t went to the party.
Why that sentence is the useful one
The learner has understood the lesson. He has learned that the past is marked on the verb, and he has applied that to a negative sentence, consistently. What he has not been told yet is that did takes the marking away from the main verb, because the teacher put the negative in the second half of the lesson. The error is evidence that the first half worked. Correcting it as a mistake wastes it; using it to introduce the did rule turns it into the bridge into the next stage, which is what it already is.
She writes I went and I did not go on the board one above the other, underlines went and did, and asks where the past is in each. Nobody needs the rule stated after that.
This is the comparison learners ask about, examiners test and coursebooks return to for three levels running. The reliable test is the time reference rather than how distant the event feels, and the fullest treatment is on the present perfect tense page in this glossary.
| Question | Past simple | Present perfect |
|---|---|---|
| Is the time period finished? | Yes. I saw her this morning is said in the evening. | No. I have seen her this morning is said before lunch. |
| Is a specific past time stated? | Usually yes, or it is understood from the context. | No. Stating one blocks the form. |
| Where is the listener’s attention? | On the event then. She broke her leg says nothing about now. | On the situation now. She has broken her leg means it is still broken. |
| What happens in a story? | Carries it. I went in May and stayed a week. | Opens it. I have just been to Lisbon. |
| Which goes with ago? | Always. The British Council names expressions with agoas a past simple use. |
Never. |
The fourth row is the pattern of ordinary conversation and it is worth teaching explicitly. The present perfect announces and the past simple narrates. Once a speaker has said I have been to Lisbon and the listener has asked when, every sentence after that is past simple.
| Past simple | Often confused with | The distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Past simple | Past continuous | The simple form gives the completed event, the continuous gives the background it happened against. I was cooking when the phone rang. The cooking is the setting, the ring is the event, and in a narrative the simple form is what moves the story forward. |
| Past simple | Past perfect | The past perfect is only needed when two past events are out of order in the telling. The train had left before we arrived. If the events are narrated in the order they happened, the past simple carries both and the past perfect is an overcorrection. |
| Past simple | Used to | Both describe past habits, but used to adds that the habit has stopped. I used to smoke implies not any more, while I smoked for years does not commit either way. Used to also cannot take a stated number of occasions. |
| Past simple of a regular verb | Past participle of the same verb | For regular verbs they are identical, which hides the difference until an irregular verb exposes it. A learner who has only met regular verbs will produce I have went, because for every verb they know so far the two forms have been the same word. |
| Past time use | Unreal use | If I had more time and I wish I knew use the past simple form for present meaning. Learners who have been taught that the form means past will read these as past, and the fix is to present them as a separate meaning of a familiar form rather than as new grammar. |
The meaning of the past simple is close to universal. The difficulty sits almost entirely in the form, which makes it an unusual grammar point and changes where the lesson time should go. This is L1 interference acting on pronunciation and morphology rather than on meaning.
Learners whose first languages do not allow consonant clusters at the end of a word, including Mandarin, Vietnamese, Thai and many varieties of Arabic, will reliably drop the -ed in asked, stopped and walked. The grammar is understood and the ending is inaudible, so the error survives written practice completely intact and only shows up in speaking.
Speakers of Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and French have a compound past built from an auxiliary plus a participle, and in several of those languages it covers the ground English gives to the past simple. Those learners tend to reach for the present perfect where English wants the plain past, producing I have seen him yesterday.
Speakers of languages that mark aspect rather than tense, including Mandarin and Russian, face a different issue again: the obligation to mark past on every single verb in a narrative, even when a time adverb has already made the time obvious. English requires it anyway, and that redundancy has to be taught as a rule because it is not communicatively motivated.
In the classroom
Four decisions that separate a past simple lesson from a past simple worksheet.
Coursebook syllabuses normally introduce the past simple at A1 or early A2, extend it through A2 and return to it against the present perfect at B1. Teachers often describe that sequencing as though the Common European Framework required it. It does not.
The Council of Europe describes a framework of six levels, A1 to C2, grouped into three bands, Basic User, Independent User and Proficient User, and states that the descriptors were created without reference to any specific language
. There is no CEFR grammar syllabus and no level at which the past simple is officially due. The sequencing is publishing convention and accumulated classroom experience, which are good reasons, and they are not a standard.

It is the verb form used for an action or state completed at a finished time in the past. Regular verbs add -ed, as in walked and finished, and a closed set of common irregular verbs change their form instead, as in went and bought. Negatives and questions use did plus the base form, so the past is marked only once in the clause.
Yes. The two names refer to the same form, and which one a teacher meets depends on the coursebook and the training tradition rather than on any difference in grammar. British materials tend to favour past simple and North American materials tend to favour simple past. Learners will meet both and should be told they are the same thing.
For most verbs, by adding -ed to the base form. Verbs ending in e add only d, verbs ending in a consonant plus y change the y to i before adding ed, and short verbs ending in a single vowel plus a single consonant usually double that consonant. Irregular verbs follow none of this and have to be learned individually. In negatives and questions the main verb returns to its base form and did carries the past, except with be, which uses was and were directly.
Because the ending assimilates to the sound before it. After a voiceless sound it is pronounced as a t, after a voiced sound or a vowel it is pronounced as a d, and after a t or d sound it becomes a separate syllable pronounced id. Only the third group adds a syllable, which is why wanted has two and worked has one. Learners cannot predict this from the spelling, so it has to be drilled by ear.
The past simple is used when the time period is finished or a specific past time is stated, and the present perfect when the period still includes now or no time is given and the point is the present result. I saw him yesterday and I have seen him today can describe events a day apart. Ago is the clearest single signal: it always takes the past simple and never the present perfect.
Coursebooks usually introduce it at A1 or early A2 and return to it at B1 against the present perfect. That sequencing is a publishing convention rather than a requirement, because the Common European Framework defines its levels through can-do descriptors created without reference to any specific language and sets no grammar syllabus. The practical trigger is whether learners can already handle the present simple and have enough verbs to tell a story with.

The present perfect is the English verb form made with have or has plus a past participle, used to link a past action to the present moment. It covers experience up to now, a situation that began in the past and still continues, and a past event whose result matters now. It never takes a finished time reference.
Guided discovery is an inductive teaching technique in which the teacher presents learners with examples of a target language item and then leads them, through questions and tasks, to work out the rule for themselves before any explanation is given. The teacher directs the route; the learners state the rule.
