Adapting teaching materials with AI means pasting an authentic text, worksheet, or article into a tool like tefl.ai’s AI Materials Adaptor or ChatGPT, telling it your students’ CEFR level, and getting back a simplified version with comprehension questions and vocabulary support in under a minute. It will not replace your judgment about what your class actually needs, but it turns a 45-minute rewrite into a 5-minute edit.
Which, frankly, is the whole point. Nobody got into teaching because they dreamed of retyping a BBC article for the fourth time this term. Let’s get into how this actually works, where it falls apart, and how to use it without handing your lesson quality over to a machine that has never met your class.
At its simplest, AI materials adaptation is text rewriting with a target reading level attached. You paste in a passage, tell the tool the CEFR level (A1 through C2) and it rewrites vocabulary, sentence length, and grammar complexity to match, usually while trying to hold onto the original meaning and key facts. Good tools go a step further and generate comprehension questions and highlight key vocabulary automatically, so you are not just left with a simplified paragraph and nothing to do with it.
The table below is the fastest way to see what this actually replaces in your week.
| Task | Manual approach | AI-assisted approach | Typical time saved |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simplify a reading for a lower level | Rewrite sentence by sentence, check vocabulary manually | Paste text, select CEFR level, get an adapted version | ~30-45 min per text |
| Write comprehension questions | Draft 5-8 questions from scratch | Auto-generated alongside the adapted text | ~15-20 min |
| Highlight key vocabulary | Manually pick and define terms | Tool identifies and explains key items | ~10-15 min |
| Differentiate one text for 3 levels | Three separate rewrites | Three separate generations, same source text | ~1-1.5 hrs |
Source/methodology: task-level time estimates based on typical materials-prep workflows described in the Chartered College of Teaching’s 2026 teacher AI-use research and tefl.ai’s own AI Materials Adaptor product documentation; figures are typical ranges, not guarantees, and will vary by text length and teacher familiarity with the tool.
Differentiating a single reading for a mixed-level class has always been one of those jobs that takes far longer than it looks like it should. You are not just simplifying words, you are checking the simplified version still makes sense, still asks something interesting, and still teaches the vocabulary you actually wanted to teach. Do that three times for three levels and an evening disappears.
This is not a small or rare problem. In the UK, the Chartered College of Teaching’s 2026 research on how teachers are using AI found that adapting texts for different reading ages and differentiating materials is one of the clearest, fastest-growing uses of AI in classrooms, alongside supporting students with additional needs. And in the US, the Gallup and Walton Family Foundation survey found that teachers who use AI weekly save an average of 5.9 hours a week, roughly six working weeks over a school year, with “modifying materials to meet students’ needs” named as one of the top uses driving that saving.
We built the AI Materials Adaptor because we kept hearing the same thing from new TEFL teachers: the certification teaches you how to plan a lesson, but nobody warns you that half your prep time will go on rewriting other people’s texts to fit your actual class.
Here’s roughly how we’d approach adapting a news article for a B1 adult class, using a tool like the AI Materials Adaptor or a general chatbot with the right prompt.
One of our graduates teaching business English online told us she uses this exact workflow to turn a single Financial Times article into three versions, B1, B2, and C1, for a mixed-ability company class in under fifteen minutes total. Before AI tools existed, she said that used to be her entire Sunday evening.
To be fair to the technology, it is genuinely good at the mechanical part: swapping complex vocabulary for simpler synonyms, shortening sentences, and generating a first draft of comprehension questions. Where it struggles is anything that depends on knowing your specific students. It doesn’t know that your class hates grammar gap-fills, or that half of them work in finance and would rather read about interest rates than holidays.
It can also occasionally flatten meaning it shouldn’t. A simplified news article might quietly drop a caveat or nuance that mattered, so treat every adapted text as a first draft that needs your read-through, not a finished resource. And if the source text is copyrighted, check you actually have the rights to adapt and redistribute it before you paste it into any AI tool; most classroom use for your own students falls under fair use in many contexts, but it’s worth being deliberate rather than assuming.
If you want a broader look at how AI fits into everyday TEFL teaching, including materials work, our sister brand’s webinar below is a good primer:
It’s worth being clear that adapting materials and planning a full lesson are two different jobs, even though AI can help with both. Adaptation takes an existing text or resource and reshapes it for your level. Lesson planning builds the structure, objectives, and activities around a topic from scratch. If you need the full lesson scaffold rather than just an adapted reading, our Lesson Plan Generator handles that side of the job, and we’ve written a full walkthrough in How to Write an ESL Lesson Plan with AI.
| Job | What it starts from | What it produces | Best tefl.ai tool |
|---|---|---|---|
| Materials adaptation | An existing text, article, or worksheet | A leveled version with comprehension and vocabulary support | AI Materials Adaptor |
| Full lesson planning | A topic, CEFR level, and duration | Objectives, warm-up, main activities, wrap-up | Lesson Plan Generator |
Most tools support the full CEFR range from A1 to C2, but very technical, poetic, or culturally specific texts adapt less cleanly than straightforward news or informational writing. Always read the result before using it.
No. You are still choosing the source text, setting the level, and editing the result. It’s a time-saver for the mechanical part of differentiation, not a replacement for your teaching judgment.
Check the rights first. Adapting a short excerpt for your own class is generally lower-risk than redistributing a full adapted article publicly, but rules vary by country and publisher, so when in doubt, ask or use openly licensed texts.
Under roughly 500 words works best with most free tools, including ours; longer texts often get truncated automatically, so trim to the section you need first.
A good tool generates comprehension questions matched to the same target level as the adapted text, so a B1 adaptation should come with B1-appropriate questions, not C1 ones bolted onto simplified vocabulary.
If you have a text sitting in a browser tab right now that you know you’ll be rewriting for tomorrow’s class, that’s the one to try first. The AI Materials Adaptor is free, and it’s built specifically for this job rather than being a general chatbot you have to prompt carefully. Quick favor: how do you actually use AI in your teaching?
We are running the first real study of AI use among TEFL teachers. 12 questions, about 3 minutes, fully anonymous. Leave your email at the end and you will get the report before anyone else.
The past simple is the English verb form used for an action or state completed at a finished time in the past. Most verbs form it by adding -ed, while a closed set of common verbs change their form instead. It is the ordinary narrative form of English and the first past form most learners meet.
The present perfect is the English verb form made with have or has plus a past participle, used to link a past action to the present moment. It covers experience up to now, a situation that began in the past and still continues, and a past event whose result matters now. It never takes a finished time reference.
