An AI curriculum generator can turn course goals into a first unit map, but English teachers still need to check standards, sequencing, learner needs, assessment, accessibility and the time available in real classrooms.
Key takeaways
| Step | Input | Useful output | Teacher decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Diagnose | Learner level, needs and constraints | Priority skills and gaps | What matters most now? |
| 2. Map goals | Outcomes and evidence | Unit sequence and milestones | Are goals measurable and realistic? |
| 3. Build units | Topics, language and skills | Lesson arc and recycling plan | Does each lesson prepare the next? |
| 4. Differentiate | Learner profiles and access needs | Scaffolds and extension | Will this work for this group? |
| 5. Review | Assessment evidence and reflection | Revision suggestions | What changes after teaching? |
Data note: Use the output as a draft map. A curriculum is a set of learning decisions, not a long AI document.
Curriculum design is where AI can feel unusually helpful and unusually dangerous. It is good at arranging headings, proposing sequence options and spotting gaps when you give it enough context. It is also good at making a twelve-week course look beautifully complete while quietly forgetting review, classroom time, assessment validity or the fact that your learners have jobs.
At its best, a generator helps you move from broad outcomes to a working map. You can provide a course length, learner level, target context, required skills, assessment dates and available materials. The model may suggest units, language functions, vocabulary sets, reading and listening practice, speaking tasks and review points. That is useful for a first pass, especially when you are starting from a blank page.
The output becomes a curriculum only after a teacher checks progression. Learners need repeated encounters with language, opportunities to retrieve it and tasks that become gradually more demanding. A week labelled “travel English” is a topic, not a learning outcome. A stronger outcome says what learners can do, with what language and under what conditions.
Begin with the real constraints. State learner age, proficiency, group size, course length, lesson duration, target context, required textbook or standards, assessment dates and any access needs. Then ask for a table with unit goal, communicative outcome, language focus, skills, recycling links, evidence of learning and materials. Tell the model to flag assumptions rather than inventing certainty.
A useful prompt might ask for a ten-week B1 course for adult professionals meeting twice a week for 60 minutes, with a goal of handling routine workplace conversations and writing clear follow-up emails. Request a progression from needs analysis to workplace scenarios, with review every two weeks and a final role-play plus email task. The more specific the input, the less generic the map.
| Dimension | Question to ask | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Outcomes | Can learners demonstrate the goal? | Vague verbs such as “understand” everywhere |
| Progression | Does each unit build on prior language? | New grammar appears once and vanishes |
| Recycling | Where does important language return? | No deliberate review or retrieval |
| Assessment | What evidence shows learning? | A final test unrelated to course tasks |
| Feasibility | Can this fit the lesson minutes? | Four major skills plus a project in 45 minutes |
| Access | Can all learners participate? | One activity mode and no alternatives |
Data note: A curriculum map should make teaching decisions easier, not hide them under more rows.
Start with evidence: a placement task, learner survey, previous work, attendance pattern or needs interview. If you teach adults, ask what they must do in English outside class. If you teach teenagers, include the school curriculum and assessment calendar. Feed the relevant summary into the planning process, but keep identifying information out of external tools.
Then challenge the first plan. Ask what a learner at the lower end of the group would struggle with, which task requires the most support and where the course might overload working memory. Ask for a second sequence with fewer topics and more recycling. The better plan is often the less shiny one.
Ask for a shared goal with varied support, not completely separate curricula for every learner. A mixed-level lesson might use the same role-play with sentence frames and a word bank for some learners, while others add follow-up questions or a longer response. AI can suggest options, but you decide whether the support is respectful, useful and manageable in your room.
| Need | Shared task | Support option | Extension option |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limited vocabulary | Plan a weekend activity | Picture prompts and phrase bank | Add reasons, conditions and alternatives |
| Low speaking confidence | Role-play a customer request | Rehearsal time and partner choice | Handle an unexpected follow-up |
| Strong grammar, low fluency | Explain a process | Model and chunk language | Speak with fewer notes |
| Mixed reading speed | Read a short workplace notice | Glossary and audio support | Infer tone and implied meaning |
Data note: Keep the communicative purpose shared where possible. Differentiation should widen access, not label learners publicly.

How AI-ready is your teaching?
Schools and employers now shortlist teachers for AI skills. Our free AI-Skilled Teacher check takes about six minutes and twelve questions, then gives you an instant certificate for your resume or teaching portfolio.
Assessment should mirror the course promise. If learners need to handle a meeting, assess turn-taking, clarification and summarising, not only a multiple-choice grammar test. If the course promises academic writing, include planning, drafting, feedback and revision. Ask AI to propose a rubric, but check that the criteria are observable and that the weighting reflects the real goal.
Build small checkpoints into the map: a two-minute speaking sample, a short email, a reading response or a learner reflection. These give you evidence before the final task. If half the class misses a target, revise the next lesson rather than marching onward because the generated calendar says Tuesday is “Unit 4”.
Do not automate the decision about what your learners need, the fairness of an assessment, the handling of sensitive data or the final interpretation of a learner’s work. Do not copy invented facts, examples or references without checking them. AI can propose a sequence; it cannot see the quiet learner who understood the idea but is afraid to volunteer.
Keep a short teacher log after each unit: what learners could do, what they avoided, what took too long and what needs recycling. Feed those observations into the next planning cycle. The curriculum becomes better because the teacher notices more, not because the prompt becomes longer.
Before the course, review the map against outcomes and constraints. Before each unit, check materials, timing and access. After each lesson, note one success and one adjustment. At the end of each unit, compare the evidence with the stated goal and decide what returns. This four-stage loop is more reliable than asking a generator for a perfect course once.
If a plan needs a full redesign every week, the first prompt may have been too broad or the outcomes too ambitious. Reduce the scope, keep the learner goal visible and let the next version be more honest. Your students do not award extra marks for a beautiful spreadsheet.
An AI curriculum generator can save planning time by proposing sequences, unit maps and differentiation options. Its value depends on the teacher’s input and review. Start with evidence, demand measurable outcomes, check progression and assessment, protect learner privacy and revise from what actually happened in class.
Use AI to get to a thoughtful draft faster, then spend your saved time on the human work: choosing an example your learners recognise, listening to their language and changing the next lesson when reality ignores the spreadsheet.
It can draft a course map with units, goals, skills and assessment ideas when you provide clear context. The teacher must verify progression, timing, standards, differentiation, copyright and learner needs before using it as a real curriculum.
Include learner age, proficiency, goals, course length, lesson time, group size, assessment requirements, available materials and access constraints. Ask for measurable outcomes and request that the tool flags assumptions instead of inventing facts.
Give a specific learner context and communicative purpose, then require concrete outputs such as unit outcomes, language functions, evidence of learning and recycling points. Review the draft against real learner evidence and remove activities that do not serve the goal.
AI can suggest shared tasks with sentence frames, word banks, extra rehearsal or extension questions. Teachers still need to judge whether the support is appropriate, manageable and respectful, and whether the task remains meaningful for every learner.
The free tefl.ai lesson plan generator can help turn approved unit goals into individual lesson drafts. Use the materials adaptor when you need to adjust a source text or handout for different levels, then review all output before teaching.
Check factual accuracy, learning progression, timing, accessibility, assessment validity, cultural fit, privacy and copyright. Pilot a small section, collect learner evidence and revise. A generated plan should remain a teacher-reviewed draft, not an automatic decision.
A good advert gives you enough information to decide whether to ask more questions. It names the employer, identifies the learners, explains the paid hours and states the application route. A risky advert leans on urgency, asks for unexplained fees, promises unusually high earnings without a timetable, or avoids telling you who legally employs you.
Never send a passport scan, bank details or payment simply because a recruiter says the opportunity will disappear today. Check the school’s own domain, request a written contract and search for independent evidence. If a recruiter will not answer basic questions about pay, cancellation rules or work permission, that is an answer in itself.
Use a short, readable teaching CV. Put your qualification, relevant degree or experience, learner age groups, availability and location near the top. Add two or three bullets showing what you can do in a classroom: plan a communicative lesson, adapt a reading text, give useful feedback, or manage a mixed-level activity. “Hard-working” is fine, but a concrete example works harder.
Prepare a brief introduction that sounds like a person rather than a brochure. Explain who you want to teach, why the role fits your next step and what support you would need. If a demo lesson is requested, choose a modest aim and show interaction. A short lesson with one clear outcome is more convincing than a grand tour of every grammar point known to humanity.
Budget for the quiet weeks. Include training, travel, deposits, transport, internet backup, police checks where required, insurance, tax advice and the possibility that your first timetable is lighter than advertised. Separate gross pay from the amount that reaches your account. If your plan only works when every available hour is booked, it needs more margin.
Set a weekly limit for unpaid preparation and keep one evening free. Teaching abroad or online can be socially rich, but it can also make work follow you into dinner if every conversation becomes a lesson plan. A sustainable schedule is not laziness; it is what lets you stay patient when the classroom is lively and the printer chooses rebellion.
The past simple is the English verb form used for an action or state completed at a finished time in the past. Most verbs form it by adding -ed, while a closed set of common verbs change their form instead. It is the ordinary narrative form of English and the first past form most learners meet.
The present perfect is the English verb form made with have or has plus a past participle, used to link a past action to the present moment. It covers experience up to now, a situation that began in the past and still continues, and a past event whose result matters now. It never takes a finished time reference.
