Building an AI ESL lesson plan is one of those skills that sounds like cheating until you have actually tried it under a Sunday-night deadline with three classes to plan and zero energy left. Done well, it can turn a two-hour slog into a twenty-minute task. Done badly, it hands you a generic worksheet that has never met a real A2 adult learner. This guide walks through the six-step workflow we use ourselves, what AI is genuinely good at, where it still gets things wrong, and a worked example you can copy for your next class.
Before the step-by-step, here is the shape of the whole process: decide on level and goal, pick a structure, generate a draft, adapt it for your actual students, source or build materials, then reflect afterward so the next plan is better. The table below breaks down what to hand the AI at each stage and, just as importantly, what you still need to check yourself.
| Lesson stage | What to ask AI | What to check by hand |
|---|---|---|
| Level and goal | “Suggest a communicative goal for [CEFR level] students interested in [topic]” | Does the goal match what your students can actually do, not just their official level? |
| Structure | “Build a lesson using PPP/ESA/task-based learning for this goal, with timings for a [X]-minute class” | Are the timings realistic for your class size and how chatty this particular group is? |
| Generate | “Write the full lesson plan: warm-up, presentation, practice, production, wrap-up” | Is the target language at the right level, or has it drifted a notch too high or low? |
| Adapt | “Adjust this activity for a shy group / mixed ability / one-to-one online class” | Would this actually work with your students’ personalities and the room or platform you teach in? |
| Materials | “Create a gap-fill, a short dialogue, or five discussion questions for this topic” | Are examples culturally appropriate, and is the vocabulary genuinely useful to your learners? |
| Reflect | “Suggest two ways to extend or simplify this lesson next time” | What actually happened in class? AI cannot see your students’ faces, so this step is on you. |

The biggest mistake teachers make when prompting an AI is asking for “a lesson on the past simple” with nothing else attached. Vague prompts produce vague lessons. Decide first: what should students be able to do by the end of class that they could not do at the start? “Talk about last weekend using the past simple” is a goal. “Past simple” is just a topic, and topics alone rarely make good lessons. Pin down the CEFR level too (A1 through C1), class size, and whether you are teaching online or in person.
Give the AI a framework rather than leaving it to guess. PPP (Presentation, Practice, Production) suits grammar-heavy lessons. ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) works nicely for mixed-skills classes. Task-based learning fits conversation-driven groups well. Naming the framework in your prompt makes the output far more usable, because the AI slots activities into stages you already recognize instead of inventing its own loose structure.
This is where the free AI lesson plan generator earns its keep. Pick your CEFR level, topic, and lesson length, and it produces a structured plan with objectives, a warm-up, main activities, and a wrap-up in a matter of seconds, ready to download as a PDF or Word file. Treat this output as a strong first draft, not a finished product. It is the blank page problem solved, not the whole job done.
If you would rather work inside a general chat tool, our guide to using ChatGPT as an English teacher covers prompt structures that produce similarly usable drafts.
No AI has met your Tuesday evening group of adults who go quiet the moment you mention grammar terminology. This is where your judgment matters most: swap out examples that will not land, simplify wordy instructions, and build in a filler activity for the class that finishes early. AI is fast at drafting; it is not the one standing in the room reading the energy.
Once the shape of the lesson is right, ask for supporting materials individually: a gap-fill worksheet, a short reading text at the correct level, discussion questions, or a simple speaking rubric. For adapting an existing article or story to a learner’s level, the AI Materials Adaptor simplifies authentic text to a target CEFR level and generates comprehension questions and key vocabulary automatically, saving the fiddly rewriting work most teachers dread.
A quick sanity check that takes thirty seconds: read every text and question out loud. If a sentence trips you up, it will trip up your students.
After class, jot down two things: what worked better than expected, and what needs cutting or extending next time. Feed that straight back into your next prompt (“simplify this for a shyer group,” “this ran ten minutes short, add an extension task”). Over a few weeks, your prompts get sharper and the AI’s first drafts need less editing. That feedback loop, more than any single tool, is what makes AI genuinely useful for lesson planning rather than just a novelty.
Say you are planning a one-hour A2 adult conversation class on “weekend plans.” A workable prompt sequence: “Build a 60-minute A2 ESL lesson using PPP on making weekend plans, including going to/will future forms.” Then: “Add a warm-up with five conversation starter questions.” Then: “Give me a controlled practice gap-fill and a freer speaking activity where students plan a fictional weekend in pairs.” Finally: “Suggest a two-minute filler for early finishers.”
What comes back should give you a warm-up, clear presentation of the target language with example sentences, controlled practice, a pair-work production task, and a wrap-up. Check the example sentences are genuinely A2 (no buried conditionals or advanced phrasal verbs), swap in place names your students recognize, and time everything against your actual 60 minutes rather than trusting the AI’s estimate.
AI is genuinely strong at structure, speed, and never running out of ideas on a Sunday night. It is reliable for warm-up questions, controlled practice exercises, and reworking one lesson three ways for three levels. It is weak at reading a room, judging cultural fit, and it will occasionally pitch language a level too high or low, so a level check is not optional. It also cannot tell whether Maria in the front row had a rough week.
Numbers vary by teacher and lesson type, but the pattern holds consistently: a first full draft that used to take a couple of hours from scratch now takes minutes, with the time saved going into the adapting and materials stages rather than the blank page.
| Task | Manual prep (typical) | AI-assisted (typical) |
|---|---|---|
| First draft of a grammar-focused lesson | 1.5 to 2 hours | 3 to 5 minutes to generate, plus 15 to 20 minutes to adapt |
| Building a gap-fill or short worksheet | 20 to 30 minutes | 2 to 5 minutes, plus a quick read-through |
| Adapting a text to a lower CEFR level | 30 to 45 minutes | Under 5 minutes with a materials adaptor tool, plus a check |
| Planning a full week of lessons | 4 to 6 hours | 45 to 90 minutes, mostly spent adapting and sequencing |

If you are still building core lesson-planning skills before layering AI on top, the Institute’s Ofqual-regulated Level 5 TEFL course covers lesson-planning fundamentals in depth. Teachers who swap tips in communities like TEFL Unpacked tend to pick up prompt ideas faster than those working alone, too.
Yes, as long as you treat it as a drafting assistant, not the final word. AI is fast at producing structure, activities, and materials, but it cannot judge your specific students or cultural fit. Always read through, adjust the level, and personalize examples before teaching from an AI-generated plan.
Give it the CEFR level, a clear communicative goal (not just a grammar topic), class size, lesson length, and teaching context. The more specific the prompt, the less editing you will need afterwards. Vague prompts reliably produce generic, less usable lesson plans.
No. New teachers still need to understand frameworks like PPP or ESA to judge whether an AI-generated plan makes sense. AI speeds up drafting, but does not teach you why a lesson is structured a certain way, which is worth building through proper TEFL training first.
Yes. The tool lets you choose your CEFR level, topic, and duration, then generates a structured plan with objectives, a warm-up, activities, and a wrap-up in seconds, downloadable as a PDF or Word file, with no account required to try it. It is built specifically for TEFL and ESL teachers.
Add specifics before generating: your students’ jobs, interests, or the city you teach in. Then edit after: swap examples, adjust vocabulary to match your group, and add a teaching note under each stage. Adapting is what turns a generic draft into a lesson your class will actually enjoy.
A dedicated ESL lesson plan generator is built around CEFR levels and TEFL lesson structure, so you get consistent, teaching-ready output without writing a detailed prompt yourself. General assistants like ChatGPT are more flexible and good for follow-up tweaks, but they need more careful prompting to maintain the same structure.

The past simple is the English verb form used for an action or state completed at a finished time in the past. Most verbs form it by adding -ed, while a closed set of common verbs change their form instead. It is the ordinary narrative form of English and the first past form most learners meet.
The present perfect is the English verb form made with have or has plus a past participle, used to link a past action to the present moment. It covers experience up to now, a situation that began in the past and still continues, and a past event whose result matters now. It never takes a finished time reference.
