AI IELTS practice tools estimate your Speaking or Writing band by scoring your response against the same four official criteria examiners use, and calibrated tools typically land within half a band of a real examiner. They’re a strong way to gauge your level and target your weak spots, but only a certified examiner can give you the score that actually counts.
If you’ve typed an essay into ChatGPT and gotten back a suspiciously generous 8.0, you already know AI scoring can be a mixed bag. Some tools are genuinely useful, trained specifically on the public band descriptors and benchmarked against thousands of real scripts. Others are a general chatbot wearing an IELTS costume, and they’ll tell you what you want to hear rather than what an examiner would. Below is the honest breakdown: what the official bands actually require, where AI estimators earn their keep, and where you still need a human.
Before trusting any score, human or AI, it helps to know what the real scale is measuring. The table below simplifies the public IELTS Speaking band descriptors for bands 6 to 8, the range most learners are aiming for.
| Band | Fluency and coherence | Lexical resource | Grammar | Pronunciation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | Fluent, only occasional self-correction; hesitation is mostly content-related, not language-related | Wide vocabulary, used flexibly; occasional slips with idiomatic phrases | Wide range of structures; most sentences error-free | Wide range of features used to convey precise meaning; easily understood throughout |
| 7 | Keeps going without much effort; some hesitation or self-correction mid-sentence, but coherence holds | Flexible vocabulary across topics; some awkwardness with less common words | Range of structures; frequent error-free sentences, a few basic errors persist | Has most of band 8’s strengths plus some of band 6’s, sits in between |
| 6 | Willing to produce long turns; coherence can slip due to hesitation or repetition | Enough vocabulary to discuss topics at length; occasional inappropriate word choice, meaning still clear | Mix of simple and complex sentences; errors in complex forms rarely block understanding | Range of features used, but control is inconsistent; generally understood without much effort |

The honest answer isn’t “AI is bad” or “AI is basically an examiner.” It’s criterion by criterion, and the gap changes depending on what band you’re already near.
| Factor | AI estimator | Human examiner |
|---|---|---|
| Speed and availability | Instant results, 24/7, unlimited attempts | Scheduled slots; official results take days |
| Consistency | Applies the same standard every time, no fatigue | Trained to ~0.90-0.92 inter-rater reliability, but two examiners still agree on the exact band only about half the time |
| Lexical resource and grammar | Strong; these are pattern-detectable from a transcript | Strong, plus better judgement on borderline idiomatic use |
| Pronunciation detail | Increasingly strong at phoneme level, useful for daily drilling | Strong, judges overall intelligibility and accent effect holistically |
| Task response nuance and rhetorical structure | Weaker, especially on qualified or “to what extent” style prompts | Strongest area; understands argument sophistication and context |
| Spotting memorized answers | Weak to moderate | Trained specifically to detect over-rehearsed, unnatural responses |
| Cost | Usually free or low-cost, unlimited use | Full test fee, one attempt per booking |

Purpose-built tools that are trained on the actual band descriptors and calibrated against real examiner-marked scripts tend to land close to human scoring, often within half a band. That’s a genuinely useful margin, roughly the same noise you’d get from two different examiners marking the same test. Generic AI chatbots without that calibration are a different story: ask ChatGPT or Gemini to mark your essay cold and you’ll often see scores half a band to a full band higher than a real examiner would give, because the model is rewarding fluent-sounding language rather than strictly applying the criteria. The gap widens the higher you climb. At Band 5-6, AI catches the same systematic errors a human would: repeated basic vocabulary, mechanical grammar mistakes, weak coherence markers. At Band 7 and above, the differences get subtle: flexibility of vocabulary, sophistication of argument, naturalness of cohesion, and that’s exactly where AI’s pattern-matching starts to miss what a trained ear catches instantly.
Whether you’re a teacher building an exam class or prepping solo, the workflow is the same: use AI for volume and consistency, then bring in human judgement for anything near your target band.
| Week | Focus | How to use AI |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Baseline and diagnosis | Record a full speaking response and submit a writing sample to get a starting band estimate and a criterion breakdown of your weakest area |
| 2 | Targeted drilling | Practice daily on your weakest criterion only (often pronunciation or grammatical range); use instant AI feedback to correct in real time rather than waiting for a weekly class |
| 3 | Consistency check | Re-record the same task from week 1 and compare; average your last five AI scores rather than trusting any single one |
| 4 | Human verification | Take your strongest recent attempt to a teacher or tutor for a final sanity check before booking the real test |
Ready to try it yourself? The AI IELTS Speaking Band Estimator lets you record a Part 2 response and get instant feedback across all four criteria, and the AI IELTS Writing Band Estimator does the same for Task 1 and Task 2 essays. Both are built specifically around the official band descriptors rather than generic chatbot scoring.
If you’re the one running the exam class, AI estimators solve a real logistics problem: you can’t give every student individual spoken feedback every lesson, but a tool can, unlimited times, outside class hours. Use it to free up your own marking time for the things AI still does badly, like coaching a student through an argument that’s technically correct but underdeveloped, or explaining why a “safe” memorized opener is quietly capping their score. tefl.ai is, as far as we know, the only AI platform built specifically for TEFL teachers, and its guide to AI in TEFL breaks down where AI genuinely helps across lesson planning, materials adaptation and exam prep, not just IELTS scoring. If you’re mapping out your own next steps as a teacher rather than a test-taker, the Career Roadmap tool is worth a look too.
The biggest mistake is treating one AI score as a verdict instead of a range. If a tool gives you a 6.5, read that as “probably 6.0 to 7.0 on test day,” not a guarantee. The second mistake is feeding a generic chatbot your essay and trusting the number it spits back without checking whether it’s actually calibrated on IELTS criteria at all. The third is skipping human input entirely once you’re within striking distance of your target: that’s exactly the zone where nuance matters most and AI’s blind spots are largest. And a quieter mistake worth naming: some students paste in an AI-written model answer and try to memorize it, which examiners are specifically trained to detect through unnatural vocabulary density and over-rehearsed intonation.
No. Official IELTS Speaking and Writing scores are only issued by trained, certified human examiners under IDP or the British Council. AI IELTS practice tools produce an estimate for self-study purposes, useful for tracking progress and spotting weak areas, but it carries no official standing and can’t be used for visa, study or work applications.
Calibrated tools built specifically on the IELTS band descriptors typically score within about half a band of a human examiner, similar to the natural variation between two examiners. Generic AI chatbots without that calibration often score half a band to a full band too generously, especially above Band 7.
Lexical Resource and Grammatical Range and Accuracy are the most reliable, since both can be measured objectively from a transcript: vocabulary variety, error frequency, sentence complexity. Pronunciation feedback at the phoneme level has also improved sharply. Task Response and rhetorical nuance remain the weakest areas.
Yes, as a supplement. They give students unlimited practice attempts and instant feedback outside class hours, which frees teacher time for coaching argument quality, register and the subtler issues AI still misses. They shouldn’t replace a teacher’s own assessment before a real test booking.
This usually happens with general-purpose chatbots rather than purpose-built estimators. Models trained broadly on language, not specifically on IELTS marking criteria, tend to reward fluent, confident-sounding writing or speech even when the content has structural or task-response problems an examiner would penalize.
No, using AI tools to practice, get feedback and identify weaknesses before your test is standard exam preparation, similar to a self-study app. It only becomes a problem if you attempt to use AI assistance during the actual official test, which is against IELTS rules and can void your result.
These tools won’t replace the person holding the official mark sheet, and they’re not trying to. What they’re good for is unlimited, judgment-free reps so you walk into the real test having already heard your own weak spots out loud. Try the AI IELTS Speaking Band Estimator free and see where you actually stand before test day.
Quick favor: how do you actually use AI in your teaching?
We are running the first real study of AI use among TEFL teachers. 12 questions, about 3 minutes, fully anonymous. Leave your email at the end and you will get the report before anyone else.
The past simple is the English verb form used for an action or state completed at a finished time in the past. Most verbs form it by adding -ed, while a closed set of common verbs change their form instead. It is the ordinary narrative form of English and the first past form most learners meet.
The present perfect is the English verb form made with have or has plus a past participle, used to link a past action to the present moment. It covers experience up to now, a situation that began in the past and still continues, and a past event whose result matters now. It never takes a finished time reference.
