AI IELTS writing feedback is accurate enough to catch grammar errors, weak cohesion, and vocabulary range issues in seconds, and most tools land within half a band of a real examiner on Task 2 essays. It is not perfect on nuanced task achievement or highly creative arguments, so it works best as a fast first pass before a human teacher’s review.
If you have ever handed back a stack of thirty IELTS essays at 11pm with a red pen and a cold coffee, you already know the appeal here. An AI scoring tool will not replace that judgment call on whether a student’s argument actually makes sense, but it will absolutely save you from writing “check your articles” for the fortieth time this month.
Most tools in this space, including the free AI IELTS Writing Band Estimator on tefl.ai, work by scoring a submitted essay against the same four criteria a human examiner uses: task achievement, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. The tools are trained on large sets of essays that have already been scored by certified examiners, so they are pattern-matching against thousands of real examples rather than guessing.
In practice, that means AI IELTS writing feedback is genuinely strong at the mechanical layer: subject-verb agreement, article use, sentence variety, linking words, and vocabulary repetition. It is weaker at judging whether an argument is actually persuasive or whether an example is relevant, because that requires a kind of contextual reading that current models still approximate rather than truly understand. We built our estimator because new teachers kept telling us they were spending hours giving the same mechanical feedback over and over, when that time could go toward the part only a human can do well: coaching a student’s actual argument.
The table below is our master reference for this post. It compares what AI scoring tools currently do well against what still needs a trained human examiner, based on published band-descriptor criteria from IELTS and our own testing against sample essays with known official scores.
| Scoring Criterion | AI Tool Accuracy | Human Examiner Strength | Typical Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grammatical Range & Accuracy | Very high | Very high | Usually within 0 to 0.5 bands |
| Lexical Resource (vocabulary) | High | Very high | Within 0.5 bands on repetition/range checks |
| Coherence & Cohesion | Moderate to high | Very high | Can miss paragraph-level logic gaps |
| Task Achievement/Response | Moderate | Very high | Largest gap; struggles with argument relevance |

One of our graduates teaching IELTS prep in Ho Chi Minh City told us she now runs every student essay through an AI scoring tool before her own read-through, purely to flag the repetitive vocabulary and grammar slips first. That single change, she said, cut her marking time almost in half because she was no longer circling the same “singular/plural” mistake fifteen times a class.
The tools are consistently reliable for:
Not every AI writing tool checks the same things. The table below breaks down the features most commonly offered, useful for teachers comparing options for a class set.
| Feature | How Common | Most Useful For |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated band score | Nearly universal | Quick self-tracking of progress |
| Grammar/error highlighting | Nearly universal | Fast mechanical correction |
| Vocabulary range analysis | Very common | Spotting repetition, suggesting synonyms |
| Coherence/structure notes | Common | Paragraph organization checks |
| Task-specific prompts (Task 1 vs Task 2) | Less common | Matching feedback to exam format |
These tools tend to struggle when an essay is grammatically clean but logically thin, for example when a student answers a slightly different question than the one asked, or supports a claim with an example that does not actually fit. A model can flag that a paragraph exists; it is much less reliable at judging whether the paragraph earns its place in the argument. This is exactly the kind of judgment call examiners are trained for, and it is why we tell teachers to treat AI IELTS writing feedback as a first draft of the marking, not the final word.
Used well, this kind of feedback fits naturally into a normal writing-practice cycle rather than replacing the teacher’s role in it. A simple workflow: students draft a Task 2 response, run it through the estimator for an instant score and mechanical feedback, revise based on that, then submit the revised version to the teacher for the deeper read on argument and task achievement. This turns one essay into two rounds of improvement instead of one, at no extra marking cost to the teacher.
I knew someone prepping for the exam who ran the same essay through three different scoring tools out of curiosity and got three slightly different estimated bands, all within half a point of each other. That is a useful reminder for students: treat the number as a helpful estimate and a direction to improve in, not a guaranteed outcome on exam day. The real value is in the specific line-by-line notes, not the single digit at the top.
For teachers running a dedicated IELTS class, the practical shift is less about replacing marking and more about reallocating it. Where a teacher used to spend an entire lesson circling grammar mistakes on twenty essays, that first pass can now happen before class even starts. Class time then goes toward the harder skills: unpacking what a Task 2 question is actually asking, workshopping stronger example paragraphs, and talking through why an argument does or does not hold up. Students arrive at that conversation with mechanical errors already flagged, so the lesson stays focused on the parts of writing that genuinely move a band score.
This also changes how progress gets tracked over a course. Instead of one band estimate per week from a single essay, students can log an estimated score every time they write, building a rough trend line long before their actual test date. That trend is far more useful for spotting a plateau early than waiting for the next teacher-marked essay to reveal it.
Teachers using tools built specifically for lesson prep, like tefl.ai’s own free lesson planning tools, can slot an AI feedback round straight into an exam-prep unit without adding extra admin. If you want to explore structured, accredited exam-prep training alongside AI tools, teflinstitute.com’s TEFL course overview is a good next stop for teachers who want to specialize in exam classes.
Yes, within a reasonable margin. Most AI scoring tools land within half a band of an official examiner score on grammar, vocabulary, and cohesion, though task achievement estimates are less precise.
No. AI feedback is best used as a first pass to catch mechanical issues quickly. A teacher’s feedback on argument quality, task response, and nuance remains more reliable and should always be the final check before a real exam.
Some tools, including tefl.ai’s AI IELTS Writing Band Estimator, are free with no account required, making them easy to add to a lesson without extra cost.
No. It is a useful practice supplement, not a substitute for structured teaching of exam strategy, task interpretation, and time management, which a proper writing course or a trained teacher still covers best.
Every practice essay is reasonable, since the tool gives instant results. The key is pairing it with periodic teacher review so students do not just optimize for what the AI measures.

The past simple is the English verb form used for an action or state completed at a finished time in the past. Most verbs form it by adding -ed, while a closed set of common verbs change their form instead. It is the ordinary narrative form of English and the first past form most learners meet.
The present perfect is the English verb form made with have or has plus a past participle, used to link a past action to the present moment. It covers experience up to now, a situation that began in the past and still continues, and a past event whose result matters now. It never takes a finished time reference.
