Adapt Reading Materials With Ai means using AI to draft a starting point while the teacher keeps control of goals, accuracy, learner context and classroom decisions. The fastest workflow is not “generate and print”; it is plan, prompt, inspect, adapt, teach and revise.
Key takeaways
Mixed-level classes need a shared topic with different routes into it. One learner may need shorter sentences and vocabulary support; another may be ready to infer attitude, evaluate evidence or write a response. AI can help create drafts at different levels, but the teacher decides what information must stay, what can be simplified and how learners will work together.
Protect the meaning of the source. Adaptation is not flattening every text into the same easy paragraph. Keep the central idea, remove avoidable barriers and make the task goal visible. If the source is current, sensitive or copyrighted, verify permission and facts before putting it into a tool.
| Step | Teacher decision | AI can draft | Human check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Define | Choose topic, goal and level range | Possible objectives | Are they realistic for this group? |
| Adapt | Set length, syntax and vocabulary limits | Levelled version | Is the meaning still faithful? |
| Support | Choose glosses, images or sentence frames | Vocabulary help | Does support aid reading or give answers? |
| Check | Design comprehension and inference tasks | Question drafts | Are questions valid and balanced? |
| Teach | Plan grouping and feedback | Extension ideas | Will learners interact meaningfully? |
Data note: Use this as a review workflow. Generated text remains a draft until checked against the original and the lesson goal.
Tell the tool the learner level, target skill, source length, output format and what must not change. Ask for a short adapted text, a glossary with learner-friendly definitions and questions separated into literal, inferential and personal response types. Request that uncertain facts be flagged rather than invented.
For mixed levels, ask for two or three versions only when you can compare them. Label the versions for teachers, not learners, if labels would embarrass students. Another option is one shared text with tiered tasks. That can preserve class cohesion while giving stronger readers a meaningful challenge.
| Approximate range | Text support | Task focus | Extension |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1 to A2 | Short chunks, images and glossary | Match, identify and sequence | One simple personal response |
| B1 | Key vocabulary and paragraph headings | Main idea and evidence | Explain a choice |
| B2 | Light glossary only | Inference and writer purpose | Compare viewpoints |
| C1 | Original or lightly adapted text | Evaluation and synthesis | Create a supported response |
Data note: Ranges are planning guides. Use learner performance and the actual text to decide the right support.
Check names, examples, assumptions and whose experiences the text treats as normal. Remove stereotypes and replace invented claims with sources you can verify. Do not paste confidential learner writing, employer documents or personally identifiable information into an unapproved tool. Use anonymised, fictional or public material instead.
Copyright also matters. A tool can help you create an original activity inspired by a topic, but that does not automatically give permission to reproduce a protected article. Keep the source, note its license or permission and cite it where appropriate. Your teacher brain is still the editor in chief.
Use the free tefl.ai tool to create a first draft, then compare it with your lesson aim and learner evidence. The tool is most useful when you arrive with a decision to make: what should learners practise, what support is fair and what would count as success?
Keep a teacher review checklist beside the draft: accuracy, level, inclusion, privacy, copyright, timing and transfer. If one item fails, edit or discard the output. A free tool can save time, but it cannot observe the class for you.
Watch what learners actually do. Are they using the target language, copying a model, avoiding the difficult part or asking a more interesting question than the plan anticipated? Make a short note. After class, revise one activity rather than regenerating the whole lesson. That is how AI becomes part of professional judgment instead of a slot machine for worksheets.
Start with one observable outcome rather than a heroic list of ambitions. Decide what learners should be able to say, understand or do by the end, then choose the smallest activity that gives you evidence. Put the outcome on the board in language learners can understand, model the task, and leave enough time for them to use it. A first lesson does not need fireworks. It needs a clear route from noticing to practice to communication.
Plan the transitions as carefully as the activity. Tell learners what to do, how long they have and what a finished answer looks like. If the task requires pairs, show the first exchange before sending everyone off. This is not over-explaining. It is insurance against twenty people asking the same question at once.
Check the learner level, age, class size, room or platform, previous learning and any access needs. Then check your materials for instructions that rely on cultural knowledge, tiny print or an internet connection that may decide to take a personal day. Keep a low-tech alternative for every key stage, such as printed prompts, board work or a partner rehearsal.
One of our graduates described their first week as “organized chaos”, which is a fair professional diagnosis. The useful habit was a two-minute post-class note: what learners could do, where they hesitated and what to change. That note becomes a better plan than a late-night attempt to make every slide perfect.
Accuracy matters, but correction should serve the lesson goal. If the goal is fluency, record recurring issues while learners speak and address two or three after the activity. If the goal is a form or sound contrast, slow down and make the target visible. Avoid interrupting every sentence, because a conversation lesson that never lets anyone finish is more traffic stop than conversation.
Use a correction ladder: gesture or facial cue, a prompt, a choice, then the answer if needed. Ask learners to notice and repair their own language where possible. That creates a classroom where mistakes are information, not public announcements. It also gives you evidence of what to revisit next time.
A workable sequence usually has a short opener, a context or model, guided practice, a more independent task and a closing check. The minutes are not sacred, but the progression is. Build in one reset point because activities often take longer once real humans are involved. If your plan has six major stages, mark the one you can drop without losing the learning outcome.
At the end, ask for evidence rather than “Does everyone understand?” Use an exit sentence, a quick classification, a short recording, a pair explanation or one example on the board. A small check tells you more than a roomful of polite nods.
Keep the core task shared, then vary the support and challenge. Provide a word bank, model, sentence frame or reduced choice for learners who need it. Offer an extension question, a longer response or a leadership role for learners who finish quickly. This keeps the room together without pretending that every learner needs the same rung of the ladder.
Groupings can change by task. Pairs help rehearsal; small groups can support idea generation; individual work shows what each learner can do. Explain that differentiation is not a public ranking system. It is simply a way to make the same learning goal reachable from different starting points.
Keep reflection short and specific. Record the original aim, one successful learner response, one point of confusion and one change for next time. Save a learner example where appropriate, removing identifying details. This gives you a small evidence trail for interviews, professional development and your own confidence.
Do not measure the lesson only by whether every stage happened. A plan can be “finished” and still miss the learners. If a useful question created ten minutes of discussion, that may be a better outcome than racing to the final worksheet. Teaching is not a train timetable, even if the photocopier insists otherwise.
A recognized TEFL course can give you a shared vocabulary for aims, staging, classroom management, language analysis and feedback. It does not guarantee a job or replace a teaching license where an employer requires one. Compare the course specification with the role you want, and look for assessment, tutor support and practical examples rather than a badge alone.
Premier’s TEFL certification options can help you compare structured training. Keep your strongest lesson plans and reflections as a small portfolio. An employer can learn more from one thoughtful adaptation than from a cloud of adjectives about passion.
AI can draft a sequence, materials and prompts, but a teacher still needs to check level, accuracy, timing, inclusion, privacy and the match with real learners. Use the output as a starting point, then edit and test the parts that affect learning.
Choose the tool that matches the task. The lesson plan generator can help structure stages and objectives, while the materials adaptor can help reshape a source text or activity. Both still need a teacher review before classroom use.
Read it aloud, compare it with authentic examples and ask whether a real learner or colleague would say it in that context. Remove filler, unexplained jargon and overly polished sentences. Invite learners to improve a draft as part of the lesson.
Do not paste personally identifiable or confidential student work into an unapproved service. Anonymise samples, follow your employer’s policy and use fictional or public examples when possible. Privacy is part of lesson planning, not a final technical check.
AI can draft and transform materials, but it cannot replace the teacher’s relationship, observation, safeguarding judgment or responsibility for a learner’s progress. The strongest workflow gives teachers more time to notice, respond and design meaningful interaction.
Check factual accuracy, level, bias, copyright, privacy, instructions, timing and whether the task requires the target skill. Try the activity yourself, predict where learners may struggle and keep a simpler backup version.
The past simple is the English verb form used for an action or state completed at a finished time in the past. Most verbs form it by adding -ed, while a closed set of common verbs change their form instead. It is the ordinary narrative form of English and the first past form most learners meet.
The present perfect is the English verb form made with have or has plus a past participle, used to link a past action to the present moment. It covers experience up to now, a situation that began in the past and still continues, and a past event whose result matters now. It never takes a finished time reference.
