ChatGPT for English teachers works when you give it a role, the student’s level, and a concrete output format, vague prompts like “write me a lesson” produce generic, unusable filler. Below are copy-paste prompts organized by lesson stage, tested against real CEFR levels, plus the exact phrasing that separates a prompt that saves you an hour from one that wastes twenty minutes of editing.
Let’s be honest about the first attempt most of us make: when trying ChatGPT for English teachers’ lesson prep, we type “make an ESL lesson about food”, get back a wall of text with a vocabulary list a computer science major couldn’t use, and decide AI is overhyped. It isn’t overhyped, it’s under-prompted. The difference between a mediocre and a genuinely useful ChatGPT lesson plan is almost entirely in how specific your prompt is, not which model you use.
ChatGPT doesn’t know your class. It doesn’t know that your B1 group in Hanoi struggles with third conditional but breezes through phrasal verbs, or that you’ve got 45 minutes, not 60. Every piece of missing context gets filled in with a generic guess, and generic guesses make bland lessons. The fix isn’t a “magic prompt” — it’s treating ChatGPT like a very capable teaching assistant who’s never met your students and needs a proper briefing.
This table is the fastest way to find a working prompt for wherever you are in a lesson, warmer, presentation, practice, or wrap-up. Each prompt is written to be copied directly into ChatGPT with the bracketed fields swapped for your class details.
| Lesson Stage | Goal | Example Prompt | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warmer | Activate prior knowledge, get students talking fast | “Give me 5 warmer questions on [topic] for [CEFR level] adult students, each answerable in one sentence, that also recycle [target grammar].” | First 5 minutes, mixed-ability groups |
| Presentation / Lead-in | Introduce new language with context, not just rules | “Write a short dialogue (8-10 lines) between two people at [setting] that naturally uses [target structure] at least 4 times, at [CEFR level].” | Grammar and functional language lessons |
| Controlled Practice | Drill the new language with clear right/wrong answers | “Create a 10-item gap-fill exercise using [target structure] for [CEFR level] students, with an answer key, avoiding vocabulary above [level].” | Grammar accuracy, homework, quick checks |
| Freer Practice | Get students producing language independently | “Design a 15-minute pair-work speaking task where [CEFR level] students must use [target language] to solve [a realistic problem]. Include role cards.” | Speaking classes, exam practice, business English |
| Wrap-up / Review | Consolidate and check understanding before the bell | “Write 5 exit-ticket questions checking whether [CEFR level] students can use [target language] correctly, gradable in under a minute each.” | Last 5 minutes, formative assessment |
Methodology note: prompt patterns above reflect a standard PPP (Presentation-Practice-Production) lesson framework widely used in TEFL/TESOL training, tested by our team against GPT-4-class models as of 2026; outputs will vary slightly by model version, so always review before class.
Here are five full prompts, ready to paste straight into ChatGPT. Swap out anything in brackets.
“Act as an experienced ESL teacher. Write a 45-minute lesson plan for [CEFR level] students on the topic of [topic]. Include a warmer, a presentation stage introducing [target language], controlled practice, freer practice, and a wrap-up. State timing for each stage and list materials needed. Keep vocabulary appropriate for [level].”
“I teach a mixed-ability class of [number] adult students, levels A2 to B1. Take this reading text: [paste text]. Rewrite it in two versions — one simplified for A2, one at the original B1 level, keeping the same content and length within 10%.”
“Generate 8 discussion questions about [topic] for [CEFR level] students preparing for IELTS Speaking Part 3. Questions should move from concrete to abstract and require at least 30-second answers.”
“Create an error-correction activity for [CEFR level] students. Write 8 sentences that each contain one common mistake with [target grammar point], mix them with 2 correct sentences, and provide an answer key explaining each error.”
“Turn this vocabulary list into a set of classroom activities for [CEFR level] students: [paste 10-15 words]. Include one matching exercise, one gap-fill, and one speaking task that forces students to use at least 5 of the words.”
Both approaches work — the right choice depends on how much control you want over the process versus how much time you have.
| Factor | ChatGPT (prompt-based) | tefl.ai Lesson Plan Generator |
|---|---|---|
| Setup time | Requires writing/refining a prompt each time | Select level, topic, and duration from a form |
| Structure consistency | Varies by prompt quality and model version | Fixed lesson structure every time (objectives, warm-up, main activities, wrap-up) |
| Customization | Highly flexible, can ask for anything, in any format | Focused on standard lesson plans; less freeform than open-ended chat |
| Output format | Plain text, needs manual formatting/export | Downloadable directly as PDF or Word |
| Cost | Free tier available; paid tiers for heavier use | Free |
Comparison reflects each tool’s standard free-tier functionality as of 2026; both are worth testing since they suit different planning styles.
Writing good prompts is a real skill, and it’s worth learning, but there’s a faster path for the parts of lesson planning that repeat every week. If you’re building a full lesson from scratch rather than tweaking one activity, tefl.ai’s free AI Lesson Plan Generator asks you for the CEFR level, topic, and duration up front and returns a structured plan with objectives, warm-up, main activities, and wrap-up, downloadable as PDF or Word, essentially the master-table prompt above, minus the typing. It’s a genuinely free tool, not a trial, and it’s worth trying alongside your own ChatGPT prompts to see which fits your workflow.
For a broader look at where AI fits across lesson planning, materials adaptation, and assessment, our complete guide to AI in TEFL covers the landscape beyond just ChatGPT.
A few patterns come up again and again in prompts that don’t work:
For a longer walkthrough of ChatGPT and other AI tools being used live for lesson planning, our colleagues at The TEFL Institute of Ireland ran a full webinar on the topic:
It’s accurate enough for most language-focused tasks, grammar drills, vocabulary exercises, dialogues, but it can occasionally produce factual errors in content-based lessons (dates, statistics, cultural details) and can be inconsistent with CEFR level unless you specify it clearly. Always read through generated materials before handing them to students.
The free tier is enough for most lesson-planning prompts in this article. Paid tiers add longer context windows and more consistent output for longer documents, which helps if you’re adapting entire readers or generating multi-week course outlines.
No, and it shouldn’t. ChatGPT is excellent at producing first drafts fast, but it doesn’t know your students’ interests, energy levels, or the joke that worked in yesterday’s class. Treat its output as a strong starting point you edit, not a finished product.
State the CEFR level explicitly in every prompt and add a constraint like “avoid vocabulary above [level], and flag any word that might be unfamiliar.” You can also paste a text back in and ask it to simplify specific words.
Yes. Tools like tefl.ai’s AI Lesson Plan Generator are built around CEFR levels and standard lesson structures, so they skip the prompt-writing step that general-purpose chatbots require.
Prompting ChatGPT well is a skill you build through trial and error, but you don’t have to start from zero, borrow the prompt patterns above, tweak them for your class, and keep the ones that save you time. That’s really the whole game: less time writing, more time actually teaching.
Quick favor: how do you actually use AI in your teaching?
We are running the first real study of AI use among TEFL teachers. 12 questions, about 3 minutes, fully anonymous. Leave your email at the end and you will get the report before anyone else.
The past simple is the English verb form used for an action or state completed at a finished time in the past. Most verbs form it by adding -ed, while a closed set of common verbs change their form instead. It is the ordinary narrative form of English and the first past form most learners meet.
The present perfect is the English verb form made with have or has plus a past participle, used to link a past action to the present moment. It covers experience up to now, a situation that began in the past and still continues, and a past event whose result matters now. It never takes a finished time reference.
