Diffit for teachers is an AI materials tool that can turn a topic, article or existing text into leveled reading content, vocabulary and comprehension activities. For ESL teachers, its value is speed and differentiation, not autopilot. You still need to check the English, the level, the cultural assumptions and whether the activity actually matches your learning goal.
Key takeaways
Diffit is a teacher-focused AI tool for creating classroom materials from a topic, a text or a web-based source. Its official getting-started guide describes outputs such as cited sources, leveled materials, vocabulary and questions, with export options for classroom documents. That makes it particularly useful when one class contains learners who need different amounts of reading support.
For an ESL lesson, the workflow might be simple: start with a short news-style text, choose a level, review the vocabulary, adjust the comprehension questions and add a speaking task. The time saving is real when the alternative is manually rewriting the same text three times. The danger is also real when a generated passage sounds smooth but quietly changes the meaning.
| Step | What the tool can help draft | What the teacher must check |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Choose a source | Topic, article or pasted text | Copyright, source quality and learner relevance |
| 2. Set a level | Leveled reading passage and vocabulary | CEFR fit, sentence length and hidden idioms |
| 3. Generate tasks | Questions, definitions or activities | Answerability, distractors and skill match |
| 4. Export or adapt | Classroom-ready document formats | Layout, instructions and accessibility |
| 5. Teach and reflect | A starting point for practice | Student response and next lesson decision |
Data note: Feature summary based on Diffit’s official help documentation, checked 5 Aug 2026. Generated output is a draft, not a verified lesson.
Diffit is useful when differentiation is the bottleneck. Imagine a B1 class reading about renting an apartment. One learner can handle the original article, another needs shorter sentences and a third needs vocabulary support before they can speak. A leveled version can help the group work from a shared topic instead of splitting into three unrelated worksheets.
It is also helpful for vocabulary recycling. Ask for a compact list, then reject anything that is not useful to your students. A generated list may include rare synonyms when your lesson needs high-frequency language. Students do not need a thesaurus wearing a tiny graduation cap; they need words they can use tomorrow.
| Quality check | Questions to ask | Quick fix |
|---|---|---|
| Level | Would my target learners understand the text without translating every line? | Shorten sentences and reduce low-value idioms |
| Vocabulary | Are the words useful and teachable at this level? | Keep the core set and add examples |
| Questions | Is each answer supported by the text? | Rewrite vague or trick questions |
| Cultural fit | Could an example confuse or exclude learners? | Swap in a familiar local context |
| Skill balance | Does the sheet include more than silent reading? | Add pair speaking or a short writing task |
Data note: Teacher-created review framework informed by British Council guidance on generative AI in language classrooms.
A general chatbot is a blank canvas. That is useful if you know exactly what prompt, format and checking process you want. It is also a lot of responsibility. Diffit starts with teacher workflows and classroom outputs, so it can feel faster for source-to-materials tasks. The trade-off is that a focused tool may give you fewer unusual formats.
Neither route removes the need for a teacher. The British Council’s guidance on generative AI and the language classroom emphasises purposeful use, critical evaluation and learner considerations. Build those checks into the workflow instead of adding them after a worksheet has already reached the printer.
AI Tools
First, level labels are estimates. CEFR is a useful framework, not a magical button that makes every sentence A2. Second, AI can produce inaccurate facts, awkward collocations or examples that are technically grammatical but unnatural. Third, comprehension questions can reward copying rather than understanding. Fourth, a neat PDF can still be a weak lesson if it has no outcome, interaction or feedback plan.
There are also privacy and copyright questions. Remove names and private student information. Do not assume that because a tool can process a webpage, you have permission to reproduce all of it for a class. Use your school policy and the source’s terms.
Compare tools by the decision in front of you. If the task is “turn this text into three reading levels,” Diffit is a natural candidate. If the task is “build a complete English lesson around a goal, with prompts and a teacher review loop,” a TEFL-specific tool may be a better fit. The point is not to collect every AI tab in the browser. The point is to save time without outsourcing professional judgment.
Try the free tefl.ai materials adaptor on the same short text. Compare the level, vocabulary and question quality side by side. Because it is designed for English-teaching workflows, it can be a useful alternative when the language-learning objective matters more than generic worksheet speed.
| If you need to… | Start with… | Your review priority |
|---|---|---|
| Level one source for mixed ability | Diffit | Accuracy and CEFR fit |
| Create a goal-led English lesson | tefl.ai lesson-plan workflow | Aims, staging and interaction |
| Generate a quick idea | General chatbot | Prompt quality and factual checks |
| Assess writing or speaking | A dedicated assessment tool | Rubric validity and human moderation |
Data note: A decision aid, not a ranking. Re-test tools as features and terms change.
Write the learning objective before opening the tool. Choose a source that you are allowed to use. Generate a first draft, then mark every sentence or task you would not be happy to defend in front of your class. Add an interactive stage, an answer key you have checked and a short exit task. Save the prompt or settings so you can reproduce the result without guessing.
After the lesson, note what students actually found difficult. Did they know the vocabulary but fail to infer meaning? Did they answer the questions but avoid speaking? That evidence is more valuable than a dashboard full of generated pages.
It can, especially for adaptation and first drafts. The time saved is not “zero preparation.” It is the difference between starting with a blank document and starting with a rough, editable one. New teachers may use the saved time to think about instructions and interaction. Experienced teachers may use it to create a second level or a better follow-up task.
Use a small trial: one source, two levels, one class, one reflection. If the review takes longer than the manual version, the tool is not helping that task yet. If it gives you a sound starting point and leaves your brain available for the human part of teaching, keep it in the toolkit.
Bottom line: Diffit for teachers is worth testing for leveled materials and fast classroom drafts. Keep the teacher in charge of accuracy, learner privacy, copyright, level judgement and the final lesson design.
Diffit offers a free tier and paid features may vary by plan. Check the current official pricing and account limits before planning a department-wide workflow. A free account can still be useful for testing whether the generated level, vocabulary and questions suit your learners.
Yes. Diffit can turn a topic, article or text into leveled reading materials, vocabulary work and comprehension questions. English teachers still need to check language level, cultural fit, factual accuracy and whether the questions measure the intended skill.
Diffit is more structured for teacher materials because its workflow is designed around levels and classroom outputs. A general chatbot may be more flexible. The best choice depends on the task, your review time and whether you need citations or export formats.
No. It can reduce repetitive drafting, but it cannot see your classroom relationships, diagnose every learner or decide whether a task is meaningful. Teacher judgment remains responsible for the final text, instructions, differentiation and safeguarding.
Avoid entering identifiable student information. Remove names, private details and sensitive records, then check your school or district policy. Treat generated feedback as a draft and keep the teacher as the final decision-maker.
A useful alternative is a TEFL-specific workflow that starts with lesson goals and lets you adapt materials, generate practice and review the output for English learners. Try the free tefl.ai materials adaptor at /ai-materials-adaptor/ and compare the result with your usual planning process.
Before you commit, write down the outcome you want from this route. Are you trying to earn a side income, move abroad, build a first classroom portfolio, or become more confident with a particular learner group? The answer changes what “good” looks like. A flexible option may be ideal for a parent or career changer, while a more structured employer may be better for someone who wants observation, mentoring and a predictable timetable.
Next, separate facts from assumptions. Facts include the written job description, the current official immigration page, the course specification, the stated hours and the payment terms. Assumptions include what a forum poster earned, whether a landlord will accept your documents, whether a platform will fill your calendar, and whether a qualification will be accepted everywhere. Keep the second list visible, because it is where most expensive surprises begin.
Build a conservative budget before you apply. Include the cost of training, equipment, internet backup, background checks, travel, deposits, tax advice and the first quiet weeks. If the plan only works when every possible teaching hour is booked, it is not ready yet. A little margin makes the first month less dramatic and gives you room to say no to a poor contract.
Then create a small evidence folder. Save the official page that explains the route, the employer’s written offer, your certificates, passport scans and a record of questions you asked. Use a consistent file name and keep private documents in a secure location. This sounds gloriously dull, but organised evidence is faster than searching through a phone camera roll while an application deadline is approaching.
For the teaching itself, prepare one adaptable lesson rather than ten perfect imaginary lessons. Choose a clear objective, a short model, guided practice, an interaction stage and a way to check learning. Note which instructions learners misunderstood and which examples made the task easier. Good teaching grows through small adjustments; it rarely arrives fully assembled like furniture from a box.
Finally, speak to people who can answer the question you actually have. A current employer can explain hours and support. An official consulate or programme office can explain permission. A qualified tax adviser can explain residence and reporting. A teacher community can share practical context, but it cannot replace an official decision. Ask precise questions and record the answer, including the date, because policies and platform features move faster than most blog updates.
Ask who the legal contracting party is, how and when you are paid, which hours are guaranteed, what happens when a class cancels and who supplies materials. Ask whether preparation, meetings, training and travel between locations are paid. If you are moving country, ask which permission covers the work and who starts the process. If the answer is “everyone does it this way,” ask for the written rule.
Check the practical teaching conditions as well. How many learners are in a class? What ages and levels are involved? Is there a curriculum? Will someone observe a lesson and give feedback? Are there safeguarding procedures and a named contact? These questions are not signs that you are difficult. They are signs that you understand teaching is work, not an extended holiday with a whiteboard.
Use a short review after every application, course module or trial lesson. Record what was clear, what was missing and what you would ask next time. This turns a frustrating search into useful professional evidence. It also helps you compare opportunities consistently rather than choosing the one with the nicest photographs or the most enthusiastic adjective.
There is no shame in changing the plan. A teacher may begin with online tutoring, discover that they prefer adults, complete additional training and later apply to a school. Someone may plan a move abroad, calculate the housing cost and decide to build remote income first. A sensible route is allowed to become a different route when the evidence changes.
Use this guide as a starting point, then verify the live details that affect your money, work permission and safety. The most useful next step is usually small: read the official page, compare two written offers, check one qualification specification, or plan one lesson for the learners you hope to teach.
The past simple is the English verb form used for an action or state completed at a finished time in the past. Most verbs form it by adding -ed, while a closed set of common verbs change their form instead. It is the ordinary narrative form of English and the first past form most learners meet.
The present perfect is the English verb form made with have or has plus a past participle, used to link a past action to the present moment. It covers experience up to now, a situation that began in the past and still continues, and a past event whose result matters now. It never takes a finished time reference.
