Where can you teach English? In practice, eligibility comes down to five or six overlapping factors: your passport, whether you hold a bachelor’s degree, your TEFL certification hours, your age, a clean background check, and whether the hiring country or employer treats you as a “native speaker” on paper. Nowhere asks for all six at their strictest, but most ask for at least three.
That answer sounds simple until you actually start applying, because every country, and often every individual employer within that country, mixes those six factors differently. A language school in Vietnam might care far more about your TEFL certificate than your passport. A public school program in South Korea will barely glance at your TEFL hours but will reject an application outright over the wrong passport. This guide breaks down how eligibility actually works as a system, not a checklist, so you can figure out where you already qualify instead of guessing.
Ask “where can you teach English” in a TEFL Facebook group and you will get twenty different answers, most of them out of date or specific to one poster’s personal experience. That is because eligibility is not one rule, it is a bundle of independent filters that get applied in a different order depending on who is hiring. Understanding the filters individually is far more useful than memorizing country-by-country trivia that changes every visa season.
The six factors below cover almost every eligibility conversation you will have with a recruiter, a school director, or an online tutoring platform’s onboarding team.
A four-year bachelor’s degree, in any subject, is the single biggest eligibility gate in the industry. It is not because a degree makes someone a better teacher (it demonstrably does not, on its own), it is because many governments tie work visa eligibility directly to holding one. Public school programs, government placements, and most international schools will not consider you without a degree, full stop. That is a visa and immigration rule, not a hiring preference, so no amount of experience or charm gets around it in those specific channels.
The good news is that plenty of legitimate teaching work exists outside those degree-gated channels. Private language academies in much of Latin America, freelance and online tutoring, volunteer placements, and some Southeast Asian language centers will hire capable, well-trained teachers without a degree, especially if your TEFL certification is substantial and your demo lesson is strong. The trade-off is usually pay and visa security: no-degree routes more often mean tourist-visa gray areas, lower base pay, or freelance status without employer sponsorship.
This is the factor people find hardest to hear, but it needs saying plainly: many employers and even some visa categories still favor passport holders from the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, sometimes explicitly and sometimes as an unwritten preference. This is not about accent quality or teaching skill, it is a mix of outdated hiring habits and, in some countries, visa rules that are genuinely tied to a short list of passports.
That said, this landscape is shifting, and it varies enormously by country and by employer type. Online tutoring platforms are generally the most passport-agnostic route in the entire industry, since many hire primarily on accent neutrality, teaching demo quality, and availability rather than nationality. Some in-person markets are also loosening this filter as competition for teachers increases. If your passport is not on the traditional shortlist, your most efficient move is to research employer-by-employer rather than assuming a whole country is closed to you, and to lean on your TEFL certificate and demo lesson to do more of the persuading.
A 120-hour accredited TEFL certificate is the de facto industry minimum that most legitimate schools and recruiters ask for, and it is worth treating as a floor rather than a nice-to-have. Courses under 100 hours, or courses with no external accreditation or observed teaching practice, are viewed skeptically by serious employers and will not satisfy the paperwork requirements some governments attach to work visas.
Beyond the 120-hour floor, more hours and more specialization genuinely open doors: a 150 or 168-hour course with a practicum component reads as stronger on a CV, and specialist add-ons (young learners, business English, exam preparation) can be the deciding factor between two similarly qualified candidates for a specific role. If you are choosing a course for the first time, our TEFL course finder is a fast way to compare accredited options by hours, specialization, and format before you commit.
Most countries do not set a minimum teaching age beyond requiring you to be a legal adult, but a real minority impose age ceilings, particularly for government-run placement programs, which sometimes cap new applicants in their late 30s to mid-40s for visa or pension-scheme reasons rather than anything to do with classroom ability. Private schools and online platforms almost never enforce an age ceiling in practice, and it is common to see career-changers in their 40s, 50s, and beyond teaching successfully, especially in adult and business English niches where maturity is an asset, not a liability.
A clean criminal background check, often specifically one covering any work with minors, is close to universal for any role involving children, and increasingly common even for adult-only teaching contracts. The check itself is usually a police clearance certificate from your home country (or every country you have lived in for an extended period), sometimes notarized and apostilled depending on the destination’s paperwork requirements. This is one of the few eligibility factors that is genuinely pass or fail rather than a spectrum: a serious criminal record, particularly anything involving minors or violence, will close off legitimate school-based teaching almost everywhere, regardless of your degree, certificate, or passport.
The blunt truth is that the industry still sorts candidates into “native speaker” and “non-native speaker” categories far more than teaching research would justify, and this sorting shapes which jobs even appear in your search results. Many employers define “native speaker” narrowly, by passport rather than by actual fluency or accent, which is exactly the same issue described in the passport section above wearing a different hat.
Non-native English speakers with strong fluency and a solid TEFL certificate are absolutely employable, and are increasingly sought after in markets that value bilingual teachers who understand the learning process from the inside. The realistic path is usually online tutoring platforms and academies that explicitly welcome non-native speakers, paired with a certificate and demo lesson strong enough to make the nationality question secondary. It is a narrower door than the one native English passport holders walk through, but it is not closed.
The table below is a qualitative snapshot of how strictly each factor tends to be enforced across the three broad hiring channels most new teachers consider. It is intentionally general (no specific country visa figures or salary numbers, since those change constantly and belong in our destination-specific guides) and is meant to help you see, at a glance, where your own profile is likely to fit.
| Eligibility factor | Government / public school programs | Private language schools & academies | Online tutoring platforms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bachelor’s degree | Almost always required (visa-tied) | Often required, some exceptions | Frequently optional |
| Passport / nationality | Often restricted to a short list | Preference varies widely | Least restrictive channel overall |
| TEFL certificate hours | 120+ hours commonly required | 120+ hours commonly expected | Varies, some accept less with strong demo |
| Age ceiling | Sometimes capped (late 30s to mid-40s) | Rarely enforced | Essentially never enforced |
| Background check | Mandatory, often apostilled | Usually mandatory | Usually required, lighter process |
| Native/non-native flexibility | Low | Moderate, employer-dependent | Highest flexibility |
Data source and methodology: qualitative pattern synthesis from published eligibility criteria on government placement program pages, TEFL Institute Group course and recruiter guidance, and general TEFL hiring norms as of 2026. This table describes typical patterns, not guarantees, since individual employers vary.
A lot of eligibility anxiety comes from outdated forum posts and myths that keep circulating long after the rules that spawned them have changed. Here is a second table clearing up the ones we hear most often.
| The myth | The reality |
|---|---|
| “You need a degree in English or Education specifically” | Almost every degree-requiring program accepts any bachelor’s degree subject; the requirement is “a degree,” not a specific major. |
| “Non-native speakers can’t get hired at all” | Non-native speakers are hired regularly, especially via online platforms and academies that screen on fluency and certification rather than passport. |
| “You must be under 30 to teach abroad” | Most private schools and all major online platforms have no age ceiling; only some public programs cap applicant age. |
| “A weekend TEFL certificate is enough” | Under-100-hour, non-accredited courses are widely rejected by serious employers and do not satisfy most visa paperwork. |
| “A minor record from years ago will always disqualify you” | Policies vary by country and by the nature of the offense; some minor, non-violent, non-minors-related records do not automatically disqualify you, though this always needs individual verification, never assumption. |
| “If one country rejects your passport, none will hire you” | Eligibility is set by individual countries and employers, not the industry as a whole; a rejection in one market says nothing about your chances elsewhere. |
The most time-consuming part of figuring out where you can teach English used to be manually cross-referencing your own profile (degree, passport, certificate hours, age, and background) against dozens of scattered program requirements pages. AI tools have genuinely changed that workflow, and it is worth using them properly rather than just asking a chatbot vague questions and hoping for the best.
Start with a structured eligibility check rather than an open-ended one. Our own country eligibility checker walks through the same six factors covered above (degree status, passport, certificate hours, age, background check, and native or non-native status) and returns a realistic picture of where your profile is currently strong and where it needs work, without pretending every door is open when it is not. It is free to use and does not require an account to try.
Beyond a dedicated eligibility tool, general AI assistants are genuinely useful for three specific eligibility tasks. First, summarizing dense visa or program requirement pages into plain language, since government program pages are notoriously written in bureaucratic language that buries the actual eligibility line in a paragraph of legal caveats. Second, drafting a comparison table of your own across two or three programs you are considering, so you can see side by side which one actually fits your degree status, passport, and certificate hours instead of relying on memory. Third, preparing application materials once you know you are eligible: our CV and cover letter generator tailors your existing teaching background to a specific program’s stated requirements, which matters more than people expect, since recruiters skim for the exact keywords their own eligibility criteria use.
One caution worth repeating: general-purpose AI chatbots are not reliable sources for hard visa facts like current age caps, processing times, or document lists, because those details change and the model may be working from stale training data. Use AI to organize, summarize, and compare, then verify the specific hard requirement (a visa age cap, a document list, a processing fee) against the official program page or your recruiter directly, every time. Treat the AI output as a first draft of your understanding, not the final word.
Since certificate hours and accreditation sit at the center of so many eligibility decisions, it is worth being deliberate about which course you take rather than picking whichever one shows up first in a search. Look for three things: a minimum of 120 hours (more if you are targeting government programs or competitive private schools), accreditation from a recognized external body rather than the course provider’s own claims, and an observed teaching practice component, since some programs and recruiters specifically ask whether your course included live, assessed teaching hours.
If you are weighing course options side by side, The TEFL Institute’s course overview is a useful starting point for comparing accredited hours, formats, and specialist add-ons before you commit to a provider. Whichever course you choose, keep the certificate PDF and any transcript documents easily accessible, since almost every eligibility check down the line, from a school’s HR department to a visa officer, will ask to see them.
Rather than trying to memorize forty countries’ worth of rules, work through your own profile against the six factors in order: confirm your degree status, be honest about how your passport is likely to be viewed in the channel you are targeting, check your certificate hours against the 120-hour floor, note whether your target program has an age ceiling, get your background check paperwork started early since it is often the slowest step, and decide whether you are targeting native-speaker-preferred markets or the more flexible non-native-inclusive channels.
Once you know where your profile is genuinely strong, the country-specific details (visa categories, salary ranges, contract terms) become a much narrower, more useful research task instead of an overwhelming one. Our sister sites carry that next layer of detail: destination guides on Premier TEFL cover country-by-country visa and salary specifics once you have confirmed you meet the baseline eligibility described here, and The TEFL Institute can help you choose the exact certification pathway that satisfies your target country’s requirements.
Eligibility is rarely a single locked door. It is closer to a set of six sliders you can actually move: getting a stronger certificate, targeting the right channel, or being strategic about which markets you apply to first can all shift your odds meaningfully, even when one factor (like your passport) is fixed. Treat this as your starting map, not your final answer, and use it to focus your research instead of guessing.
Private language academies in much of Latin America, online tutoring platforms, and some Southeast Asian language centers regularly hire strong candidates without a bachelor’s degree, especially with a solid TEFL certificate and a good demo lesson. Government and public school programs almost always require a degree for visa reasons.
Most legitimate schools and all government programs require at least a 120-hour accredited TEFL certificate. A small number of informal or volunteer roles skip this requirement, but they are the exception, not the norm, and pay accordingly.
Yes. Non-native speakers with strong fluency and a recognized TEFL certificate are hired regularly, particularly through online tutoring platforms and academies that assess candidates on teaching ability rather than passport alone.
Most private schools and virtually all online platforms have no age ceiling. Some government-run placement programs do cap new applicant age, typically somewhere in the late 30s to mid-40s range, for visa or pension-related reasons.
A clean background check is required for almost any role involving minors and increasingly for adult teaching roles too. Serious offenses, especially those involving minors or violence, will close off most legitimate school-based teaching. Minor, unrelated historical offenses do not always disqualify you, but this always needs individual verification against the specific program’s policy.
AI tools can summarize dense visa and program requirement pages into plain language, help you compare your profile across multiple programs side by side, and speed up preparing application materials once you know where you qualify. They should not be treated as the final word on hard facts like visa age caps or document lists, which still need verifying against the official source.
120 hours is the widely recognized industry floor for accredited TEFL certification. Courses under 100 hours or without external accreditation are frequently rejected by serious employers and do not satisfy the paperwork requirements some governments attach to work visas.
The past simple is the English verb form used for an action or state completed at a finished time in the past. Most verbs form it by adding -ed, while a closed set of common verbs change their form instead. It is the ordinary narrative form of English and the first past form most learners meet.
The present perfect is the English verb form made with have or has plus a past participle, used to link a past action to the present moment. It covers experience up to now, a situation that began in the past and still continues, and a past event whose result matters now. It never takes a finished time reference.
