Is it cheating to use AI for lesson planning? No, not when a teacher directs the process, checks the output, and adapts it to real students; it only becomes a problem when a teacher submits AI content unedited as original professional work without disclosure. The tool does the typing, not the teaching judgment.
No. Using AI for lesson planning is not cheating in any professional sense, because a lesson plan is not a test a teacher is being individually examined on: it is a working document meant to serve students, and the standard practice in teaching has always involved borrowing, adapting, and reusing materials, from textbooks to colleagues’ shared folders to published schemes of work. When a teacher types a prompt into an AI tool describing the level, the age group, the language point, and the classroom constraints, then edits what comes back, the plan reflects the teacher’s professional decisions about what will and will not work with that group. The AI produced a draft; the teacher made it teachable.
The confusion tends to come from comparing lesson planning to a different kind of task, like a student essay, where the entire point of the exercise is to prove the student’s own understanding. Lesson planning has never worked that way. Teachers have never been expected to invent every warmer, every gap fill, and every discussion question from a blank page as evidence of their competence. What they are expected to do is choose good material, sequence it sensibly, and deliver it well in the room. AI changes where the first draft comes from. It does not change what a teacher is actually being evaluated on.
The line sits at disclosure and judgment, not at whether AI was involved at all. If a school asks a teacher to submit an original scheme of work for accreditation or observation purposes and that teacher submits AI output verbatim while claiming it as entirely self-written analysis, that crosses into misrepresentation, in much the same way that copying a colleague’s plan wholesale and presenting it as new work would. The problem is the false claim of authorship on a document where authorship specifically matters, not the technology used to produce a draft.
Compare that to the far more common daily situation: a teacher uses a free lesson plan generator to produce a first-pass 40-minute plan on the third conditional, adjusts the timings because their class talks more than the AI assumed, swaps in local references, and teaches it. Nobody asked that teacher to prove they invented third-conditional teaching from scratch. The plan works because the teacher shaped it, and that shaping is the actual skill being exercised. Academic writers looking at generative AI in schools have made a similar point: much of the anxiety around “AI cheating” in lesson prep is really about unfamiliarity with a new normalization process, not about a genuine breach of professional standards (Altered States of Academia).
Official guidance treats AI as a support tool for teachers, explicitly rejecting the idea that using it undermines professional standing. UNESCO’s AI Competency Framework for Teachers sets out the knowledge, skills, and values teachers need to use AI responsibly and effectively in their own practice, treating AI literacy as a professional competency to build, not a shortcut to be ashamed of (UNESCO). The framework’s whole premise is that teachers who understand how to direct AI tools well are more effective, not less credible.
The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Educational Technology reached a similar conclusion in its report on AI and the future of teaching and learning. Its first stated principle is “humans-in-the-loop”: the report explicitly rejects the idea of AI replacing teachers and calls for educators to remain the decision-makers who notice patterns, apply judgment, and override AI suggestions when needed (U.S. Department of Education). That is a direct statement from a national education authority that a teacher directing an AI tool, then overriding or editing its suggestions, is the AI being used correctly, not the teacher cutting corners.
| Task | AI involvement | Generally accepted? | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| First-draft 40-minute lesson plan | AI generates structure, teacher edits | Yes | Teacher makes final pedagogical decisions |
| Warm-up activities and fillers | AI generates ideas, teacher selects | Yes | Low-stakes, routine prep task |
| Differentiated worksheet versions | AI adapts one text to two levels | Yes | Saves rewriting time, teacher still checks accuracy |
| Formal observation lesson plan, submitted as original analysis | AI output pasted unedited, claimed as self-written | No, if undisclosed | Misrepresents authorship on an evaluated document |
| Scheme of work for accreditation submission | AI-generated, teacher discloses AI use per institution policy | Typically yes, with disclosure | Transparent about drafting process |
Source note: acceptability judgments reflect common professional norms described in the UNESCO AI Competency Framework for Teachers and the U.S. Department of Education’s 2023 AI in education report, both cited above; individual school and accreditation body policies may vary and should be checked directly.
Lesson planning feels different because it sits close to a teacher’s sense of professional identity, even though it is functionally a production task rather than an assessment task. A teacher’s expertise shows up in classroom management, in reading the room, in adjusting on the fly, and in relationships with students, not in the sheer labor of typing out a plan from nothing every single week. Once that distinction is clear, using AI to handle the repetitive drafting work stops looking like a shortcut around the job and starts looking like what it actually is: automating the part of the job that was never the actual skill being tested.
There is also a fairness angle worth naming honestly. Teachers using AI well are not producing lower-quality lessons than teachers who spend three hours handwriting a plan from a blank document; in many cases the AI-assisted plan is more consistently structured, because tools built around frameworks like presentation-practice-production keep the stages properly timed. The skill shifts from generation to curation: knowing what to keep, what to cut, and what to rewrite for the specific group in front of you.
A teacher should use AI as a first-draft generator and research assistant, then apply their own classroom knowledge before anything reaches students. Start with a specific prompt: level, age group, class size, time available, and the exact language or skill focus, not a vague request like “make a lesson about food.” A vague prompt produces a generic lesson that needs heavy rewriting anyway, which defeats the time-saving point. From there, run the draft through a genuine sense-check: does the timing match how this particular class actually behaves, are the example sentences relevant to these students, and does the practice stage give quieter students a real chance to participate.
The workflow that tends to hold up under scrutiny looks like this: generate a structured skeleton with a purpose-built tool such as the tefl.ai tool overview, localize the examples and references, adjust timings based on real classroom pace, and keep a light note of what you changed and why. That last step matters more than people expect. It is the difference between a teacher who can explain their planning choices in an observation feedback conversation and one who genuinely cannot say why a particular activity is there.
Used thoughtfully, it does not; used passively, it can. The risk is not the AI itself, it is treating every output as finished rather than as a draft worth interrogating. A teacher who runs the same type of prompt every week without reflecting on what worked in the actual classroom will plateau, the same way a teacher who reused one photocopied worksheet for a decade without updating it would plateau. The fix is the same in both cases: stay curious about your own students’ reactions and keep adjusting based on what you observe, rather than what any single source, human or AI, hands you.
On the flip side, AI-assisted planning can genuinely sharpen a newer teacher’s sense of lesson structure, because well-built tools consistently model a sound staging sequence (warm-up, presentation, controlled practice, freer practice, wrap-up) that some early-career teachers are still internalizing. Seeing that structure modeled cleanly, over and over, week after week, can accelerate the exact skill critics worry AI will erode.
It means the perception problem is usually solvable with a five-minute conversation, not a policy change. If a school leader or colleague raises an eyebrow at AI-assisted planning, the honest answer is straightforward: the plan was drafted faster, then shaped by professional judgment, exactly the same judgment that would have gone into a plan built from a textbook or a shared department folder. Most reasonable colleagues accept that once it is framed clearly, because most schools already tolerate borrowing and adapting materials from other sources without demanding an itemized account of originality.
Where the perception genuinely matters is in formal, evaluated documents: a scheme of work submitted for accreditation, a plan submitted for a teaching portfolio, or a lesson plan tied to a performance review. In those specific contexts, checking your institution’s disclosure policy before submitting AI-assisted work protects you far better than either hiding it or assuming nobody minds.
We are running a survey of English teachers on what AI has changed in their work, what it has not, and where it gets things wrong. Twelve questions, about four minutes, no email address required.
The results will be published free on tefl.ai. There is very little independent data on this, so what teachers tell us here is what the report will say.
The honest bottom line is that AI lesson planning tools are closer to a very fast, very well-read teaching assistant than to a cheat code. They remove the blank-page problem and the repetitive formatting work, freeing time for the parts of teaching that AI genuinely cannot do: reading a room, adjusting mid-lesson, and building the kind of rapport that makes students want to try. Reviewers who worked through The TEFL Institute of Ireland’s own training on this topic have said the appeal is exactly that practical time saving rather than any shortcut around teaching itself; one reviewer, Gerard, put it plainly after finishing his course: “The course is well-structured and the information is solid. The platform interface is a bit basic, but it’s functional and everything is easy to find” (Gerard Powell, Trustpilot, five stars), a fair summary of what a well-built AI-assisted workflow should feel like too: functional, not flashy, and there to serve the actual teaching.
If you want to see what a genuinely honest AI-assisted planning workflow looks like end to end, from prompt to final classroom-ready plan, the tefl.ai AI tool overview walks through the free tools built specifically for this, rather than adapting a general-purpose chatbot built for something else entirely.
No, using AI for lesson planning is not cheating for a certified teacher, provided the teacher reviews, edits, and takes responsibility for the final plan before teaching it. The ethical issue only arises if AI output is submitted as original, undisclosed work on a formally evaluated document, such as an accreditation portfolio.
Most schools focus on lesson quality and classroom outcomes rather than how the first draft was produced. If asked, explain that AI generates a starting structure which you then adapt to your specific students, the same process teachers have always used with textbooks and shared resources.
No. AI can generate a structured first draft quickly, but it cannot know your students’ pace, interests, or classroom dynamics. The U.S. Department of Education’s own guidance calls for teachers to stay “in the loop,” reviewing and overriding AI suggestions rather than accepting them automatically.
Policies vary by institution, so always check your specific accreditation body’s rules before submitting AI-assisted work for formal assessment. Where disclosure is required, being transparent about AI use in drafting is the safest approach.
A student essay exists to prove the student’s own understanding, so undisclosed AI authorship undermines the entire exercise. A lesson plan is a working document meant to serve students, and its value is judged by classroom effectiveness plus the teacher’s professional editing, not by proving the teacher personally typed every word.
Teachers commonly report cutting first-draft planning time significantly compared to writing a plan from a blank page, though exact time savings vary by subject, lesson complexity, and how specific the prompt is. Vague prompts save less time because they need heavier editing afterward.

The past simple is the English verb form used for an action or state completed at a finished time in the past. Most verbs form it by adding -ed, while a closed set of common verbs change their form instead. It is the ordinary narrative form of English and the first past form most learners meet.
The present perfect is the English verb form made with have or has plus a past participle, used to link a past action to the present moment. It covers experience up to now, a situation that began in the past and still continues, and a past event whose result matters now. It never takes a finished time reference.
