Presentation, practice, production (PPP) is a three stage lesson framework for teaching a single language item. The teacher presents the target form in context, learners practise it in controlled exercises, then use it more freely in a communicative task. It remains the default shape of the trainee TEFL lesson plan and the structure most course books are built around.
The short version
PPP moves a class from teacher control to learner control in three steps. Presentation establishes meaning, form and pronunciation. Practice builds accuracy under constraint. Production asks learners to use the item for a purpose of their own.
It is clear to plan, easy to observe and easy to assess, which is why teacher training keeps it. It is also built on the assumption that learners acquire what they are taught in the order they are taught it, which is the assumption second language acquisition research has spent forty years questioning.
Each stage has a different job, a different balance of teacher and learner talk, and a different definition of success. Confusing them is the most common planning error on the framework.
| Stage | What the teacher does | What success looks like | Typical share of a 60 minute lesson |
|---|---|---|---|
| Presentation | Sets a context, draws the target item out of it, checks meaning with concept questions, models and drills the form and the pronunciation, then writes it up. | Learners can say what the item means, when it is used and how it sounds. Not yet that they can use it. | 15 to 20 minutes |
| Practice | Runs controlled and then semi controlled exercises: gap fills, transformations, substitution drills, matched pairs, a personalised sentence stem. | Accuracy. Learners produce the form correctly when the form is the only thing being asked of them. | 20 to 25 minutes |
| Production | Sets a task with a genuine outcome where the target item is useful but not compulsory, then stands back and monitors. | Fluency, and evidence of the item being chosen rather than obeyed. Errors are noted for later, not corrected on the spot. | 15 to 20 minutes |
PPP earns its place when the target is small, discrete and genuinely new to the class. One tense contrast, one functional phrase, one pronunciation feature, one set of collocations. The framework gives a novice teacher a defensible order of events and a clear point at which to stop talking, and it gives an observer a visible structure to assess.
Experienced teachers rarely run it as a pure sequence. More often the three stages are treated as components that can be reordered or repeated. A class that already half knows the item is better served by starting with production, seeing what comes out, and presenting only the gap that appears, which is the shape usually called test teach test. A class meeting a genuinely unfamiliar form is better served by the full sequence.
The practical failure mode is a production stage that is really a third practice stage. If the task can only be completed by using the presented item, learners are not producing, they are complying. A production task should have a real outcome, allow other language in, and survive a learner solving it a different way.
A B1 general English class of fourteen adults. Sixty minutes. The target is used to for past habits that have stopped. Every stage below is written as the teacher actually runs it, with the thing that most commonly goes wrong beside it.
| Stage and timing | What happens in the room | What usually goes wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Lead in, 5 min | Two photographs of the same street, 1985 and now. Learners talk in pairs about what has changed. | The lead in is treated as presentation. It is not. Nothing is taught here and no target language is required. |
| Presentation, 15 min | The teacher tells a short personal story containing four instances of used to, then elicits one sentence onto the board: There used to be a cinema here. Concept questions establish that it was repeated or long lasting, that it is finished, and that it is not true now. The form is boarded as used to plus infinitive, the negative and question forms are given, and the weak pronunciation of the phrase is drilled chorally then individually. | Meaning is skipped and only form is boarded, so learners can conjugate a structure they cannot place. Or the teacher explains for eight minutes instead of eliciting, and learner talking time collapses. |
| Practice, 22 min | First controlled: eight gapped sentences about the town, checked in pairs then open class. Then semi controlled: learners complete five stems about themselves, such as When I was ten I used to, and compare in threes. The teacher monitors for the two predictable errors, the past form used to went and the question form did you used to. | The class stays in controlled practice for the whole stage because it is comfortable and quiet, and never reaches the semi controlled step where learners attach the form to their own meaning. |
| Production, 15 min | In groups of four, learners agree on the three biggest changes in their own childhood neighbourhood and present one to the class in ninety seconds. Used to is useful for this and nobody is told to use it. | The task is written as make six sentences with used to, which is practice wearing a production label. Or the teacher corrects errors during the task and the fluency the stage exists to build never appears. |
| Feedback, 3 min | Four sentences from the monitoring go on the board, two correct and two not, and the class decides which is which. | Feedback is cut because the lesson has run over, which removes the only stage where the errors from production are actually addressed. |
The lesson is judged on the production stage. If learners used used to when they had a choice, the sequence worked. If they used the past simple throughout and only produced the target when instructed, the item was practised and not learned, and it will need meeting again.
PPP is surrounded by frameworks that look similar on a plan and behave differently in a room. These are the distinctions that matter.
| PPP is not | The actual difference |
|---|---|
| Task based learning | PPP chooses the language first and builds a lesson around it. Task based learning chooses the task first and lets the language needed emerge from the attempt, then studies it afterwards. The order is reversed, and so is who decides what gets taught. |
| Test teach test | Test teach test starts with a diagnostic activity, teaches only what the diagnosis exposed, then retests. It is PPP with the presentation moved and made conditional. Use it when the class may already know the item. |
| Engage, study, activate | ESA, described by Jeremy Harmer, names the same three functions but explicitly allows them to be reordered and revisited within one lesson. PPP as usually taught is a fixed line. ESA is the same elements without the obligation to run them in order. |
| The communicative approach | Communicative language teaching is a broad set of principles about what language is for. PPP is one lesson shape that can serve those principles or work against them, depending entirely on whether the production stage is genuinely communicative. |
| Practice and production being the same thing | Practice constrains the learner to the target and measures accuracy. Production frees the learner and measures fluency and choice. A task that requires the target item is practice, whatever the plan calls it. |
| A lead in | A lead in generates interest and activates what learners already know. Presentation introduces something new and checks it. A lesson that leads in and then goes straight to practice has no presentation stage at all. |
PPP has no single founding paper. It settled into British English language teaching through the 1960s and 1970s out of situational language teaching and the behaviourist habit forming tradition that preceded it, and the sequence is commonly attributed to Donn Byrne, whose Teaching Oral English of 1976 set out presentation, practice and production as the shape of an oral lesson. Jason Anderson traced the term through the pages of ELT Journal in 2017 and found it arrived as a description of what teachers already did rather than as a theory anyone proposed.
That origin is the root of the criticism. PPP assumes that a form presented on Tuesday is available for use on Tuesday, and second language acquisition research does not support that. Patsy Lightbown argued in 1985 that learners acquire structures in their own developmental order and that teaching cannot simply override it. Peter Skehan in 1996 and Jane Willis in the same year made the case that the production stage under PPP rarely produces anything the presentation did not put there, and proposed task based instruction in its place. Raquel Criado’s 2013 review gathers the objections and concludes that the model’s weakness is its linearity rather than its components.
The defence is worth stating because it is not merely conservative. Michael Swan argued in 2005 that the case against explicit teaching of form had been overstated and that the research rarely showed what its advocates claimed, and Anderson’s position is that PPP survives because it is a usable default that competent teachers vary, not because anyone believes learning is linear. The honest summary for a working teacher is that PPP is a planning tool rather than a theory of acquisition, and it causes trouble mainly when it is mistaken for one.

Choose PPP by the target, not by habit. If the item is small, discrete and new, the sequence fits. If it is a skill, a broad area of vocabulary or something the class half knows, another shape will serve better.
Write the production task first. Planning backwards from the task is the simplest guard against a production stage that is really practice. If the task survives a learner completing it without the target item, it is a real task.
Do not treat the sequence as a promise. A clean PPP lesson does not mean the item has been acquired. It means it has been met, checked and rehearsed once. The evidence says learners will need to meet it again, in other lessons, in another order.
PPP stands for presentation, practice, production. It is a three stage lesson framework used in English language teaching in which the teacher presents a target language item, learners practise it in controlled exercises, and learners then use it more freely in a task. The abbreviation is standard in TEFL and CELTA training and is unrelated to the same letters used in finance or public policy.
Yes, widely. It remains the framework most initial teacher training courses teach first, the structure most course book units follow, and the shape most commonly seen in observed lessons. It is used despite sustained academic criticism because it is quick to plan, easy to observe and reliable with a narrow, unfamiliar target.
PPP selects the language item first and designs the lesson around it, so the task at the end exists to practise what was taught. Task based learning selects the task first, lets learners attempt it with the English they already have, and teaches the language that the attempt showed they lacked. PPP teaches then uses, task based learning uses then teaches.
Presentation, where meaning, form and pronunciation of the target item are established and checked. Practice, where learners produce the item accurately in controlled and then semi controlled exercises. Production, where learners complete a task with a genuine outcome in which the item is useful but not compulsory, and fluency rather than accuracy is the measure.
The central objection is that it assumes acquisition follows teaching order. Research on developmental sequences, particularly Lightbown in 1985, indicates learners acquire structures in their own order regardless of when they were taught. A second objection is practical: the production stage frequently reproduces the presented item rather than generating real use, which makes the lesson look successful without demonstrating learning.
Avoid it when the class may already know the item, where test teach test wastes less time. Avoid it when the aim is a skill such as listening or extended writing rather than a discrete form. Avoid it when the target is a broad lexical area, because presenting a set of items in one stage overloads the class and leaves nothing for practice to consolidate.
PPP sits inside a wider set of lesson frameworks and classroom techniques. The full set is collected in the TEFL teaching methods and classroom techniques glossary, which defines twenty terms and links each to its own entry.
The closest neighbours are task based learning, which reverses the order PPP uses, and the affective filter, which explains why the production stage tends to fail in a class that feels exposed. The glossary also covers drilling and teacher talking time versus student talking time, both of which are decided inside the presentation stage.
For the qualification terminology that sits around this, including what CELTA, TESOL and Level 5 mean, see TEFL qualifications explained on teflinstitute.com. The communicative approach that PPP is usually placed inside is covered in depth at what is the communicative approach in ESL teaching. The past simple is the English verb form used for an action or state completed at a finished time in the past. Most verbs form it by adding -ed, while a closed set of common verbs change their form instead. It is the ordinary narrative form of English and the first past form most learners meet.
The present perfect is the English verb form made with have or has plus a past participle, used to link a past action to the present moment. It covers experience up to now, a situation that began in the past and still continues, and a past event whose result matters now. It never takes a finished time reference.
