Task-based learning is an approach in which a lesson is built around a task with a real outcome rather than around a language item chosen in advance. Learners attempt the task with whatever English they have, then study the language they needed. Grammar is addressed after use, not before it.
The short version
The word task is used loosely in staffrooms, which is the main reason task-based learning is misapplied. In the literature it has a narrow meaning. Jane Willis and Rod Ellis both set out criteria that are close enough to combine into a working test. An activity is a task when:
Put plainly: if the class could complete it correctly and still have learned nothing about communicating, it is an exercise. If the class could complete it and the teacher could not predict in advance exactly which sentences would be produced, it is a task.
This is also where the approach connects to the Council of Europe’s framework. The CEFR describes language use in action-oriented terms, treating learners as social agents who accomplish things, which is the same premise a task-based syllabus is built on.
Willis (1996) gives the framework most teachers actually use, and the British Council’s TeachingEnglish guidance on a task-based approach follows the same sequence. Three phases, six moves:
| Phase | What happens | What the teacher is doing |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-task | Topic introduced, task explained, sometimes a recording of fluent speakers doing something similar. | Setting up. Not pre-teaching the grammar the task will need. |
| Task | Learners do it in pairs or groups, using whatever English they have. | Monitoring and noting language gaps. Not correcting. |
| Planning | Learners prepare how they will report the outcome to the class. | Available as a language adviser. This is where accuracy pressure enters. |
| Report | Groups present. The class compares outcomes. | Responding to content first, language second. |
| Analysis | Learners examine language from the task or from a fluent-speaker model. | Directing attention to specific items that came up. |
| Practice | Controlled work on the items identified. | Teaching, at last, the things the class demonstrably needed. |
The ordering is the whole argument. Learners meet the gap in their own English before the teacher fills it, so the language focus answers a question the class has already asked itself. Willis calls the middle three stages the task cycle; Ellis (2003) uses pre-task, during-task and post-task for the same territory.
The task
A visitor is coming to your city for two days and has 150 euro to spend, not counting accommodation. In groups, plan their two days. You must agree on one itinerary and be ready to defend it against the other groups.
Pre-task, eight minutes.
The teacher shows two photographs of the city and asks what a visitor would want. The task is explained and the budget written on the board. No grammar is presented.
Task, fifteen minutes.
Groups of three negotiate. The teacher circulates with a notebook and writes down what she hears: we can to go, is more cheap, I think better we start in the morning, and a repeated struggle to say it is worth it. She corrects nothing.
Planning, ten minutes.
Groups decide who says what and write notes. Now they ask the teacher how to phrase things, and now she answers, because the class has moved from meaning to accuracy of its own accord.
Report, twelve minutes.
Each group presents its itinerary. The class votes on which visitor had the better weekend. Content first: the vote is about the plan, not the English.
Analysis and practice, fifteen minutes.
The teacher puts six sentences on the board, taken from her notes and anonymised. The class repairs them. Two items get controlled practice: comparative forms with cheaper than and more expensive than, and the chunk it is worth plus a gerund. Both were chosen because the class needed them twenty minutes earlier, which is a stronger reason than the next page of the coursebook.
| Task-based learning is not | The actual difference |
|---|---|
| PPP | PPP presents the target language first and asks learners to produce it last. Task-based learning reverses that: production comes first and the language focus is decided by what the production revealed. See presentation-practice-production in the glossary. |
| Communicative language teaching | Not a rival. CLT is the broad approach; task-based learning is one way of organising a syllabus inside it. For the wider approach, The TEFL Institute covers the communicative approach in ESL teaching. |
| Project-based learning | Scale and duration. A task fits inside a lesson and produces a single outcome. A project runs across weeks, usually produces an artefact, and carries content goals beyond language. |
| Any group speaking activity | The commonest error. A discussion with no gap, no outcome and no reason to reach agreement is a warmer. If nothing has to be decided, produced or resolved, it is not a task. |
| Teaching without grammar | Grammar is taught, and taught deliberately. It is taught at the analysis and practice stages instead of at the start. |
The origin is usually traced to N. S. Prabhu’s Communicational Teaching Project in Bangalore in the late 1970s and early 1980s, described in Second Language Pedagogy (1987). Prabhu taught without a linguistic syllabus at all, on the argument that grammatical competence develops as a by-product of attention to meaning. Michael Long later supplied the theoretical case, and Willis, Ellis and Nunan turned it into something teachable.
The classroom research is broadly favourable. Bryfonski and McKay’s meta-analysis of task-based implementations, published in Language Teaching Research in 2019, pooled studies across a range of settings and reported a positive overall effect for programmes taught this way.
The criticism is worth stating rather than skipping, because a definition page that only reports the case in favour is not a reference. Michael Swan’s 2005 article in Applied Linguistics, “Legislation by hypothesis: the case of task-based instruction”, argues that the approach was promoted well ahead of its evidence, that it neglects the efficiency of direct teaching, and that it suits learners who already have some language far better than genuine beginners. The beginner objection is the one most teachers meet first: a class with almost no English cannot attempt a task with whatever English they have, because they have none.
The workable position, and the one most training courses now teach, is that task-based learning is a strong default from roughly A2 upwards and a poor default below it, and that a course usually mixes it with more presented input rather than choosing one or the other. Knowing the criticism is also what lets you defend the approach when an observer asks why you did not teach the grammar first.

Task-based learning is an approach in which a lesson is built around a task with a real outcome rather than around a language item chosen in advance. Learners attempt the task with whatever English they have, then study the language they needed.
Pre-task, task, planning, report, analysis and practice. Willis groups the middle three as the task cycle and the last two as language focus. The teacher does not pre-teach the target grammar in the pre-task stage, because identifying the target is the point of the task.
The order. PPP presents a chosen structure, practises it and then asks for freer production. Task-based learning starts with production, and the language taught afterwards is chosen from what learners were unable to say. PPP decides the target in advance; task-based learning discovers it.
Usually not. A task has an outcome that can be judged as achieved or not achieved independently of the English used, and it leaves learners free to choose their own language. A gap-fill has neither, so it is an exercise. A worksheet that asks two learners to compare different information and agree an answer can be a task.
No. Grammar is taught explicitly at the analysis and practice stages. What changes is when it is taught and how the item is chosen. The teacher selects from the language the class visibly needed during the task rather than from a syllabus fixed before the lesson began.
It works poorly with genuine beginners and this is the most substantial criticism of the approach. A learner with almost no English cannot attempt a task using the English they have. From roughly A2 upwards it becomes workable, and most courses mix task-based lessons with more presented input at the lowest levels.

The past simple is the English verb form used for an action or state completed at a finished time in the past. Most verbs form it by adding -ed, while a closed set of common verbs change their form instead. It is the ordinary narrative form of English and the first past form most learners meet.
The present perfect is the English verb form made with have or has plus a past participle, used to link a past action to the present moment. It covers experience up to now, a situation that began in the past and still continues, and a past event whose result matters now. It never takes a finished time reference.
